Mere Christianity: CS Lewis

How many of you have read it? Is it worth it? My dad read it and said it was pretty good, but that it's "above me" *rolls eyes* anyway, is it worth reading? Or is it kinda...shallow and stuff that most people know already?

I have it too...but haven't read it yet.

After I finish the Dune series (in book 4 of 6) I'm gonna read it though.

That's a classic book on Christian apologetics and is regarded as a "must read" by many. I have always loved the quote from CS. Lewis in that book when he said: "Atheism turns out to be too simple. If the whole universe has no meaning, we should never have found out that it has no meaning..."

I have only read parts of the book as it requires careful study. C.S. Lewis was a profound thinker and his writtings require careful reading to grasp some of the things he says.

I read the book and after reading it I felt that I did not get much out of it. It definately does require carefull reading. I do plan on trying to read it again, and hope I will get more out of what I originally read.

Well i just cleared out one of my walk-in-cupboards and found my long lost copy under a pile of other books i had tossed in there 10 years ago. Maybe now i will give it another go lol

I read part of it once... I never got into it. It feels like it was written a hundred years ago (wait a minute... it was, wasn't it?). If I ever find it again, I think I'd like to give it another try. I've heard a lot of great things about a similar book called The Case for Christ.

The Case For Christ by Lee Strobel is an excellent book as is the Case For Faith.

Speaking of C.S. Lewis, it's interesting to learn that J.R.R. Tolkien was instrumental in leading C.S. Lewis to Christ. They were both prolific writers.

I have even heard atheists commend C.S. Lewis for his writings as a great thinker.

Read this last year. I couldnt stand it and honestly didn't get a thing out of it. It is on a level of its own--way above myself. I wouldn't recommend it for a quick read. You definitly need some patience to get anything out of it.

This book changed the way I looked at Christianity. Please everyone read this at least once. It takes some effort (C.S. Lewis was a smart man) but it is entirely worth it. This answered many questions that were keeping me from having a great relationship with God. Please try it.

I really feel blessed after having read "Mere Christianity" many years ago. Like Lewis, I was the ultimate skeptic, finding fault in Christian doctrine and considering it to be wishful thinking. Through all the trials and tribulations of life, I keep coming back to this work, and it is a real factor in my faith.

Yeah, screwtape letters is brilliant. The great thing is the perspective it's from, means you get an insight into stuff, that you don't get when you look at it from just one side.

I'd have to say that Mere Christianity is one of my favorite all time books...It does take some thought to understand, but it can be done. It's maybe just not 'light' reading.

Screwtape Letters is also AWESOME...such a good book.

C.S Lewis books are all awesome. I like The Abolition of Man also.

I liked it, but I think that Chesterton's Orthodoxy is better, although its also somewhat philosophical and not a light read.

I'm currently reading Mere Christianity and I'm really enjoying reading it. I feel like I'm getting a lot out of it, but I already know I will want to read it again because there is so much to take in and I know I'm not taking it all in the first time around. I feel like some of the things I've read help me to form logical arguments about Christianity and morality, whereas usually I know what I want to say but can't find the right words.
