People talk about legalism. What does the Bible say? As Christians are we to show mercy, compassion and forgiveness for others? What did Jesus say about the law of God? Do we have a right to ban someone from fellowship as Paul said when they break the law of God.

According to AI
  1. Biblical Basis: Jesus and Paul both discuss church discipline. In Matthew 18:15-17, Jesus outlines a process for dealing with a member who sins: first, address the issue privately; if unresolved, bring one or two others; if still unresolved, bring it to the church; and if the person refuses to listen even to the church, treat them as a "pagan or a tax collector"1. Paul also addresses this in 1 Corinthians 5:1-13, where he advises the church to expel a member engaged in serious sin1.
  2. Purpose of Discipline: The goal of church discipline is not to punish but to restore the individual to a right relationship with God and the community. It aims to protect the purity of the church and encourage repentance and reconciliation23.

We read with Paul where the person did repent and was restored to fellowship.

The bible has enough verses so anyone can cobble together what they want to see in it.

In the end it is an exercise in which you judge God and choose your own judgment according to who you are.

How do we choose our own judgment? Do you mean we judge ourselves?
As Jesus taught, the way we judge is the same way we are judged.

As James taught, mercy triumphs over judgment.
