I'm sure you've seen the headlines and the mug shot of Mel Gibson being booked for DUI. It is one of those human-interest stories that generate an enormous amount of media attention and website traffic, not so much because it involves alcohol abuse but because it involves a celebrity.

No. I'm pretty sure his problem is the alcoholism and the anti-semitism. He's going to have to be the one to make the conscious decision to give up alcoholism and have the willpower to see it through. He'll have to be the one to heal his own hatreds, his own angers, to fix his own faults. And he'll have to have the willpower to do so.

People can help, but it ultimately comes down to the decisions of Mel himself and no one else. No matter what method he goes through with, be it spiritual or mundane, it's his choice.

I thought at first the title of this thread was what this thread was about. then I read the link. its just a sermon using Mel as an example how we all need to repent and get saved, etc. Its nothing more than that. the guy lists a whole bunch of stuff besides the alcohol that Mel is "guilty" of.

excerpt from link

its just a preacher using Mel as an example as well as his personal opinion that showed his ignorance of the 12 Step Programs that help millions of alcoholics.

Signed,
Waiting for the next time the author sins so I can say the same.

reminds me of a bumper sticker I use to have: "next time you think your perfect, try walking on water".

Please, let's be charitable. Gibson may not be Laurence Olivier or even Clint Eastwood but he's a decent enough actor. We've all had sentiments like "if I had this guy's money and fame I'd be in hog heaven!" but the reality is we're living our lives and he's living his. We can also say his father "did a number on him" but the fact is we all have family of origin issues, too. Let us pray for Gibson and his family and let it go at that.

But the thread title does have merit. Alcohol abuse is problematic, but when the alcohol abuse is interrupted the preexisting thought distortions remain. Those of us on the liberal side of various issues are tempted to gloat when a hero of those with whom we disagree is revealed to have feet of clay but we should resist the temptation.

Of course I believe anti-semitism and devotion to the extreme ideal of pre-Vatican II Catholic fascism are reprehensible things and should be opposed but that kind of goes without saying.

Besides, this could inspire him to get with George Miller again and make a Mad Max 4 movie.

While media critics have castigated Jewish studio execs for being charitable, saying "in Hollywood the only morality is the bottom line" perhaps, whatever their motives, they're right.

Let it go.
