I remembered several years ago playing Imperialism 2. I wanted to get it again, but it's so old, I couldn't really find it for a reasonable price. I just happened to stop at Best Buy to see if they had any good games cheap. I saw this Medieval: Total War for $9.99. Hey, that looks cool.

Cool?! It's awesome. It's like Imperialism II on steriods with a face lift. Granted, I think I liked the trade model of Imperialsim better, but the battles, map, political intrigue and such are so cool on Total War. The only thing I gripe about a little is I can't really zoom out from the battle field to be able to see the layout of my troops. Other than that, it's really interesting.

Any one else into these type of strategy games? How about Rome: Total War?

I bought R:TW half price at an EB sale, and I enjoyed it, although I got frustrated with it after a while, because I didn't seem to be able to advance very far very fast... I'd just get somewhere and then the governors in my cities would die... argh.

Anyway, I also have M:TW here, but I haven't gotten around to playing it yet

I played and replayed Medieval:Total War quite a number of times, usually with different factions. Favourite units are the Heavy Jannisary Infantry, extremely deadly against anything, especially with 3rd level weapons and armour.

If you are playing a Catholic faction, you can use grand inquisitors to get rid of annoying factions. I had managed to successfully try the pope for heresy.

Now I am addicted to Rome:Total War. Currently playing Selucids, and established an empire from covering Persia, Arabia, Lybia, Jerusalem, modern day Turkey, and Greece. The best part about battles are when elephants charge into a unit of legionnaires, and see men fly and fall from the impact.

Yep!

Currently playing the Germans. Knocked the Brits out and I am pushing through Gaul to take on Rome early in the game before they get their really good units. So far they [Germans] have been the most fun to play.

Rome: Total War is my favorite RTS....ever. What I love about it is the actual strategy involved, it seems like in most games you just keep building tech buildings until you get the 'mammoth tank' style unit and can breeze through any map. Naval combat was the only frustrating thing for me, because I would always focus on land armies and to get around the Mediterranean it took a long time to move my armies if the seas were already dominated.

Thanks for all the great responses. There's one thing on the battle map that frustrates me, and maybe you guys can help. When I get an army all lined up just the way I want, but I want all of them to merely advance in the same formation, it never works! Do any of you know how to do this?

Thanks!

Try bribing enemy generals over. That may be expensive, but also supply border cities with governors. The only people you cannot bribe (as far as I know) are the ruler and the heir.
