  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

What do you guys think about those who either exaggerate about their military service, or have never served? You know the people you read about being busted for wearing medals and uniforms they never earned. Me personallly, I have no use for them. It may seem flattering, but it does a huge disservice to all of us who actually serve and it slaps the face of those who actually sacrificed something in order to earn their Silver and/or Bronze Stars, and Navy Crosses.

They are an insult to everyone that served. Personally, I think public humiliation would be a start, then if there was any way possible (and there probably is not), prosecute for impersonation and whatever else can fit.

But public humiliation/embarrassment is a good start. I have no use for a human like this either.

I was reading in the Marine Corps Times a couple of weeks ago on how big this issue is. A GySgt was driving in New York City(he's a reservist) and he saw a First Sergeant in his blues walking across the street. He noticed something wasn't right, because he had 8 service stripes on, and had something like 10 rows of ribbons. He followed him and cornered him. He found out the guy was a phony. He then proceeded to call the police and confiscated his dress blues.

People like that really get under my skin. I know allot of people get out of the Marine Corps for various reasons, but all love the Corps in some fashion no longer how long they've been out. To see something like that should definitely bother all who are serving or have served. There is actually a department in the FBI set aside to catch these guys.

I grew up in a military family (dad career A.F., last 6 on Army Bases as Weather support), did a semester of AFROTC while in the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M, did enlisted basic, joined AROTC, got my reserve commission, blew out my back during FAOBC and attended one drill at my Guard unit before medically retiring.

Nedless to say I can talk the talk, but since I never was on active duty I have, over the last few years, decided to refer to myself as having played soldier and fleshing out the details if people ask instead of saying I was "in the Army."

At least your honest about it. These clowns are nowhere near honest. One guy reportedly got promoted from Sgt to Colonel for inventing a shutoff switch for a submarine:doh:

People who decieve others about their military service are pathetic. Now, old guys drinking beer at the VFW telling tall tales about killing fifty germans with their bare hands is alright, but just flat out lying about your experiences, well, that's pretty low. Lying about getting the Medal of Honor is incredibly despicable, I have no words that are within the rules of these forums to describe my low opinion of such people.

My father and I were at a SOF convention in Las Vegas...my father was career Navy and I was in the 82nd and 101st in the Army - one of the vendors is wearing an Army fatigue shirt, and he has a Special Forces patch on his left sleeve - upside down.

I asked hm what Group he was with and he made something up, so then I asked him why he had his patch upside down.

Odd, I just ran into one of these guys this morning. Guy starts talking about being a Viet Vet, I ask what unit he was with, he says 101st. I ask what battalion, he says 2nd battalion. I say 2nd battalion of what he says 2nd battalion of the 101st. I ask what unit he says 2nd battalion.
I say look genious, I was in 1/ 502nd Inf, 101st.

I get "2nd battallion" again and then I ask him how many PLF's can you put in a kit bag.

Blank stare.

Imagine that.

I've had the bizarroworld experience from yours. At least twice I have been thought that I was a Vietnam or Vietnam era vet because I knew stuff.

As you see by my age tag, I was born in 1968.

A question about something similar to this issue, while I do not dress up and pin more medals than I already earn, I have a love for the AF despite being in the Army and I like to wear my CWU-45 flight jacket or my A-2 with accurate squadron/wing patches when I do wear it. For the nametag I do not use wings, but a plane silhouette and my name. Do you think this is illegal?
