"...McDonald's yanks sliced tomatoes over Salmonella fears

  • Spokeswoman says removal of tomatoes is a precaution

  • CDC has said at least 23 people have been hospitalized
  • Grape tomatoes in salads are not variety in question
McDonald's says it has stopped serving sliced tomatoes in its restaurants over concerns about Salmonella food poisoning linked to uncooked tomatoes.
art.mcdonalds.store.gi.jpg
A McDonald's spokeswoman said the decision to pull the tomatoes was a precaution.

Spokeswoman Danya Proud said Monday the world's largest hamburger chain has stopped serving sliced tomatoes on all of its sandwiches in the United States as a precaution until the source of the salmonella is known.

Proud says McDonald's will continue to serve grape tomatoes in its salads because no problems have been linked to that variety.
The source of the tomatoes responsible for the illnesses in at least 16 states has not been pinpointed.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said at least 23 people have been hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported....."

"... media relations spokeswoman for Yum! Brands, Inc. (NYSE:YUM) says it is removing tomatoes from its Taco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut restaurants as a precaution.
Taco Bell Corp. in the U.S. has also stopped serving tomatoes and several U.S. grocery chains, including Winn-Dixie Stores, Ralphs, Vons and Albertsons, have stopped selling red plum, red Roma or round red tomatoes...."

I'm glad you posted this! I don't usually eat fast food, but yesterday I really wanted one of their chicken sandwiches. I was irked when I got home to find it didn't have tomatoes on it, thankfully I had some here at the house. Now I feel kind of bad for getting all wound up about it lol.

Doesn't this just make you mad? Now why on earth would fecal matter be on tomatoes?
Well--again, we can thank the meat industry. There is so much poop produced with these factory farms that they cannot get rid of it fast enough. So they pump it out of the overflowing poop ponds and spray it on vegetable fields!! What insanity is this? Nature never intended for animals to be raised and treated like this and now we are ALL paying the price for the lust of animal flesh.

I really detest McDonald's food. I would rather skip that meal and wait until I got home. I do however love fresh ripe tomatoes. I sure hope they get this matter resolved. In the mean time, I will just have to make do with canned tomatoes. A very poor substitute at best, but it won't be long before the home garden vegetables will be available.

Yes it would be unthinkable for the fast food restaurants to wash their fruits and vegetables, something that is recommended by the FDA even when there is no outbreak of contaminated produce. Common sense isn't all that common anymore.

I went to my favorite healthfood store the other day and they had lots of organic tomatoes. I'll still get my summer fix! :) I didn't plant a tomato garden this year, and I'm really wishing that I had.

I'm with ya LongHair, I cannot stand McDonald's food. I can't even have their salads because they have bacon on them, and they don't fix them fresh so you can't special order.

I also LOVE fresh sliced tomatoes.

I grew up on a farm and most years my folks had a big garden. We had more fresh veggies than you can imagine when I was growing up and I still love that type of food.
