A friend of ours is a regional manager for McDonald's.

She said that every McDonald's in America makes their target profit for the day's operating cost by the close of breakfast menu sales.

Salads are simply the McDonald's response to off shoot the hoopla that followed a documentary movie, Supersize Me, that slammed their former menu. And as a way of seeming to pioneer the fast food industry with a healthy menu alternative.

Who actually buys McDonald’s salads? It’s a question many of us have asked ourselves. The answer, you may have guessed, is just about no one.

Well that explains the weird looks when I sit down and ask for a cup of tea. :o

I went to one and asked for some Joe, but they pointed me to a similar establishment down the street.

It doesn't really surprise me. McDonalds started offering salads as a knee jerk reaction after the whole "Supersize Me" thing. They did it as a way to improve their reputation. But the reality is that their salads ain't that healthy. Croutons .. cheese .. full fat dressing. Might as well eat a normal, plain burger, and have a few fries and a glass of water. The calories and fat content wouldn't be so different.

You can't legislate commonsense. People either have it or they don't.

Ah, I posted without seeing this. Yes, the final credits of 'Supersize Me' included some kind of statement about how McD's would now offer salads and wouldn't ask customers any more if they wanted to supersize.

Not surprising. Their salads are awful.

A few years ago I gave them a few chances. One time, the lettuce and carrot strips were frozen solid under the chicken. I have no idea how that even could occur??

Gave up on them quickly.

Goverment tells resturants their menu is not healthy, so they offer tasteless salads so they can say they offer healthier meals.
Now people are upset that almost no one buys them?

Goverment does not understand how real life works. Just because you offer something "healthy" on a menu doesn't mean people will buy it.

School lunch-just because the school offers nasty nutritious meals doesn't mean kids will eat them.
Personally, I think school lunch was the reason I never got fat when I was in school. I never looked forward to a school lunch. Many days I would go hungry because the food looked or smelled nasty.

When did the government tell McDonald's to change their menu?

+1. The company should be required to provide a list of ingredients and so forth, but I don't believe it's the company's "fault". People stuff their face with stuff that's KNOWN to be bad for you - then they want to sue them for being overweight or having high cholesterol?

Putting the emphasis on McDonald's takes away from personal responsibility. It's up to each individual to educate themselves at this point and exercise self-control. It would be different if we suddenly found out that eating fast food on a regular is bad for you, but it's common knowledge.

Super Size Me sure was interesting and informative (and helpful). But I think it tried to point the finger.

There's blame to be placed on both sides. There's a lot of conflicting nutrition information out there and it can be hard for people to figure out, objectively, what is good and what is bad.

Regarding McDonald's and other restaurants, even for the health-conscious consumer, it's not immediately clear at the point-of-sale how different food items compare to each other. For example, I'm pretty careful about my diet and on the rare occasion that I do eat fast food, it's typically something small off the dollar menu. But looking at the nutrition info , I was surprised to see how little difference there is between some of the small "value" iteams and some of the items on the regular menu, or between "healthy" options and "bad for you" options. Likewise, I was surprised at the wide gap between some of the other items.

I welcome the day when restaurants are forced to put caloric and other dietary information on the menu.
