Even before the House Judiciary Committee voted Friday to send articles of impeachment to the full House for a vote next week, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he is working in "total coordination" with the White House about President Donald Trump's upcoming trial in January.
Not long after, his Democratic counterpart, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, issued a pointed statement reminding senators must take an oath to be impartial.
"Everything I do during this, I'm coordinating with White House counsel," McConnell said in an interview with Fox News' Sean Hannity Thursday evening. "There'll be no difference between the president's position and our position as to how to handle this."

McConnell's statements, both in the OP and when he stated that there was "no chance" Trump would be removed, demonstrate that he cannot be considered an impartial juror. The idea that the lead juror would be coordinating with the Defense - and openly at that - is a complete travesty of justice, no matter who you're talking about.

I think it's an interesting question whether the Supreme Court's opinion is even relevant. The right of judicial review for trials is based on the concept that if something is unconstitutional the courts shouldn't enforce it. So it's reasonable for the Supreme Court to decide what laws the courts will enforce. But impeachment isn't a court proceeding. It's independent of the courts except for the chief justice's job to chair the session. Congress is exercising rights given directly by the Constitution. No, a DA is preparing for a trial. That's part of the court system. Congress isn't.so every district attorney can subpoena the president if they want (that is one of the three cases they accepted)
