McConnell didn't allow the Democrats to convict Trump, as many of them had been trying to do since his election. However, he has spoken out strongly twice with regard to Trump guilt in the matter. Before the insurrection, he acknowledged Biden's victory immediately after the states certified their electors on December 14th. He indicated a couple of weeks ago that Trump had clearly committed impeachable acts. And today, he repeated the attack on Trump's actions. IMO, after what could have happened to members and to Pence, McConnell found it necessary to denounce Trump's actions in clear terms. HOWEVER, as leader of the Republican contingent in the Senate, he couldn't vote to convict. Impeachment is, after all, a political decision. The illusion of being a "jury" is just that. ============= McConnell will now be fighting against the Trump side of the party for the next 6 years. It will be a difficult fight. Make no mistake, he is no friend of the Democrats; he will certainly do a lot to disrupt Biden's agenda. ============ As far as 2022 is concerned, the Democrats should be in very good shape. The state of the country will be greatly improved in November 2022. The economy will be improved and COVID will be in the past, except perhaps for a annual vaccine, as is the case for flu. The Senate should be safe. However, it will be take a 2 year effort to retain the control of the House, given gerrymandering and the continuing efforts of Republican state legislators to suppress votes.
