• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hi there,
I have just recently discovered this site and have found comfort in knowing that there are other people like me.
Here are some things that I have found helpful to combat the guilt, fear of not being saved, doubt etc.

These verses keep me going sometimes when I feel like giving up.

1Timothy 1:15,16 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners-of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on Him and receive eternal life.

1 Peter 3:18a For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Ephesians 2:8,9 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast.

Romans 3:22-25a This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in His blood.

Romans 7:19 For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do-this I keep on doing.

Romans 8:1-3a Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering.

I know what it's like to find these verses hard, almost impossible, to believe when things in my mind are really bad. But I cling to the fact that it is all there in black and white, to be read again and again as often as neccessary.

I find that reading good books like 'Evidence that demands a verdict' (am reading recent edition 'New evidence that....') and 'Are the new testament documents reliable?' help to secure my faith. Also listening to/reading testimonies of people that I trust to be telling the truth. The stronger my faith in the Bible, the easier it is to rely on the Scriptures.

Medication seems to be helping and hopefully will be more helpful as time goes on.

Having someone who really cares for you and has hope that things will get better, even when you have no hope yourself is extremely valuable. But if you don't have someone like that, go back and read the verses again - THERE IS HOPE!

Thanks for your insights, Kazkoss. These are indeed wonderful verses and promises from our Heavenly Father. Welcome to the forum and I hope you will also gain a lot of strength from it.

These are great. If I may add one that was particularly helpful for me when I felt condemned:

For if our hearts condemn us, God is greater than our hearts and knows all things. 1 John 3:20

I have noticed lately that the Epistles are so comforting and reassuring. Yet, I still struggle with some parts of the Gospels, especially as I realize that Christ did not sugar coat anything (not that I would expect him to). As I consider this, it is yet further evidence that He is in fact, God, as He echoed many Old Testament themes in his conversations with the Jews.

The boldness of many of Christ's words (admittedly some things I wish He never said), are stunning, and to me scary at times. Has anyone who has struggled found a healthy approach to the Gospels? I try to read them as though I fully belong to Christ and try not to get caught in the crosshairs of words directed at His enemies. But many times my mind and overactive conscience places me in the crosshairs of Christ's admonitions and I get hurt. Mark 3:29 comes to mind.

By the way, I recommend Philip Yancey's book, The Jesus I never knew.
