  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

(3) "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? (4) How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? (5) You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

Would informing someone of a problem that you believe they have or something you believe they're doing that is wrong go against this verse? I lthink it's more focused on hypocrisy. Don't say its wrong to do something and then go do what you are against.

I would appreciate feedback.

Thanks

Hello geobry.

I think you have the right idea. This is part of a sermon Jesus is giving for the people. He's at a part where he is telling them (us) not to be hypocrites when we consider what others do because we have plenty of problems ourselves. We are not to be the pot calling the kettle black as it were.

This does not mean that we must not tell another person that they are doing something wrong unless we are perfect first. If that were the case, since we are never perfect, no one could ever tell another person anything. And that wouldn't work, would it?

As a matter of fact, we should point out problems. It's the way we do it that is important - we shouldn't do it from a position of superiority since we are not superior at all.

I guess you might look at who he was speaking to. He was speaking to the religious Jews who thought they were better, then say a fisherman or a carpender.

He was speaking to those who held the LAW with such greatness, that a regular Jew was not treated with much respect.
So when you speak to a regular Jew about what he is doing, make sure you are not doing someing even worse, but with a different title.

You who carry the Law are not better then those who can't read or write.

It's not as much a prohibition of telling others when they are wrong. Jesus is talking about those who preach righteousnous falsely- who routinely greviously sin without remorse and attempt to hide it as these Pharisees did- and then telling people about their minor flaws and judging them as evil for their smaller deeds.

2 Tim 4:2 discusses how we are to correct others. We are to do so in kindness and with careful insruction. We are sinful, and are not to ignore our own sins and call ourselves righteous while condemning others.
