Was wanting to know what these verses mean.

21Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

22Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

To me it means (layman’s terms) Pew Christians. Christians that go through the motions thinking if they do all the right things and are "good"....sit in the pews every Sunday or whenever, and never have a "real" relationship with God by faith. They are not fooling Him. Entrance to heaven is assured upon salvation. Salvation, attained by the Blood of our savior on the cross, gives us instant justification before God. The Belief in that act of deliverance...causes us to want to build a relationship with Him. So you just cannot go through the motions, you have to have faith Short, incomplete answer I know but I have to get going for a bit....I am sure there are others than have some better scripture and ideas BBL :)

There are different ways of saying this, but not better ways.

I know of a long time sunday school teacher that got saved this last weekend at a mens retreat. Praise God, he was finally broken and came to the cross for the very first time after a life time of playing church.

Mat 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
Mat 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Notice Jesus didn't say "LORD, LORD" but "Lord, Lord". They are both the same word but have entirely different meanings. "LORD" is God. "Lord" is Mr.
There are some people who profess that Jesus Christ is a good guy because that is what they have been told, but don't believe that He is Savior. Many churches are like that. They sing praises to Jesus but follow after the tradition of man, even to the point of completely going against what God has said in His word.
There are some that "make miricles" in order to make money. We've seen these people on TV.
Even Satan can make things happen, like make it appear that he is casting out devils. Satan knows the Bible better than anyone on earth. Look at what he did to Job.

I understand this, makes sense, now that it is explained to me. How though, is someone reading on their own supposed to know the difference between the two meanings?

It's important for all of us sheep to be in flocks. I suggest that you find or form a study small group from the members of your local church. We need each other because we have different gifts.

We learn the Bible in increments. Once we get one concept down the Holy Spirit shows us some more. Step upon step, precept upon precept. I still have a long way to go.

Isaiah 28:10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:

I have been blessed with a Bible believing, Bible preaching church. The Bible is opened and that is our text. I have been blessed with good teachers in our church that can present the word clearly and a soft ear to hear. Pray for understanding and let the Bible interpret the Bible.

I always thought of that passage in connection to this one:

Revelation 3

14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; 15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. 16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. 17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: 18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. [emphasis mine]

A woman I know calls these kinds of people "fencesitters". They sit up on the fence - up on their "high horse" - and refuse to join one side or the other. They don't lend a hand, but sit up there with the fencepost shoved... well, you know. They won't commit but think they are so great. They are the ones God will vomit (spue is to vomit) out of His mouth.

And they are the people who, when they reach heaven, will think that they belong there, but Christ will deny them like they denied Him - denied Him food, water, shelter, a helping hand, a warm shoulder, and so on.

While I agree that these verses apply to the "fencesitters" and lukewarm "christians" in churches today, I also think that it is geared towards Mormons, JWs, and the other Christian cults. It may also be speaking of Muslims, as they proclaim Jesus to be a great prophet and man of God, and as such call Him "lord" but don't worship Him as God.
Just my two cents.

Amen!

It also refers to people who follow Christ for the sake of family tradition and not out of personal faith in HIm.

It seems that most kids try to be "Christians" because their parents and the church expect them to. While they have an understanding of the gospels and God, what is the most important thing is that they must have first and foremost a personal relationship with Christ and accept Him as their Savior & Lord and admit that they are guilty of sin and fall short of His glory and in need of repentance.

The ones that know fullwell what the Bible teaches, yet, in action or words, say we don't care what the Bible says, we are going to do it our way. Also the ones that are puting doubt in the minds of many in the word of God the Bible. They are begiling many today just like satin begiled Eve in the garden "yeah just what did God say".

This verse will apply to a vast array of people. When I first read this verse(s) it scared me to death! These verses really make a person want to get down to business on their salvation. Is it real, or is it fake? I think that would be the worst thing possible to happen to a person. To go through life thinking they are going to heaven and then once that Day comes, God looks at them eye to eye and says, "I never knew you." OUCH! Scary stuff indeed.

I think that verse applies to fencesitters, cults, people who call God by a little "g", people who just look to God when they are in trouble, the self seeking who use Christ as a gain financially, and basically anyone who thinks being a good person gets them favor into God's kingdom.

In Revelation, after the millenial kingdom, it says the number of people who turn away from God will number the grains of sand on the ocean! Truly narrow is the way.

Well I was unfortanetly one of those people who I believe went to churh becuase my dad made me. I went up front to get saved at 6, and now I look back and believe with all my heart I did not know what I was doing. Through my teens, I'm now 28, I realized that I was being convicted by God, but I never told anyone. I was prideful, and felt that ashamed of myself. I would ask Jesus to save me, and I meant it, but never went public. When I was in my teens, early 20's, when people would say God did not exist, Jesus is made up, etc. I never professed him to those people. I was a people pleaser , and I am now ashamed to admit, but I was ashamed that I had accepted Christ. I was ashamed to tell others of Christ because I did not want to accept them. I have asked God to forgive me of this, and it almost seems impossible that He will, but His word says he will. I know know what the word says we are as filthy rags, because I am a filthy sinner.

What I have been doing is everyday reading the word, trying to see what salvation truly is, not by just what my pastor says it is, but what Jesus and the word says it is. I know I need to be re-baptised. I know I need to profess Christ, there are many things I need to get right. I also want to know what Mark 16:16. I have heard that we do not need to be baptised, but Jesus clearly states here that we need to bepatised.

Mark 16:16 (King James Version)

16He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

I ant to make sure that I do everything right.

I think this scripture means, that those that profess to be Christians i.e. JWs, mormons, cults, lukewarm, those that claim christian by birth & baptism.

They will get to face a Holy God, cry out that they did this and that, but then the Lord will say depart.

The question isn't do you know Jesus, but rather, Does Jesus know you?
