Sins are committed primarily in the heart.

I've heard of pedophiles being castrated and still have their temptation just as strong.

Your love is where your heart is.

Those who contemplate suicide are those who are losing or who have lost hope, and hope is one of the main theological virtues. If you have God, you have hope. If you give up on hope, you give up on God. So while I can't agree they have the exact same thing, the motivation, the thoughts are the same, but one thinking it only goes part way and opens the way, while the other goes all the way. They are both sins, but one is more severe.

Sin is committed particularily when you start thinking it over and planning it. You can have an involuntary reaction to a temptation and that is not sinful, it is normal, but when you start planning on how to commit that sin, how you would work it out, where it would happen, how you would cover for it after, well, it sounds like it's just as bad.

This is a topic which many rational people have difficulty with. Perhaps I can explain it briefly.

All deliberate action is a direct indication of the will. Subsequently, the will is the source of all sin. Jesus is here speaking of all sin. One who simply meditates upon sinful activities but carries none out, simply lacks resolve! Of course, there are sin's unto death and sins not unto death. Generally, sins of the mind are not sins unto death, but they are the window to mortal sins.

It is also important for me to distinguish between temptation and impure thoughts.. Temptation is an unfortunate part of life.. Temptation in and of itself is not sinful (for our Lord was also tempted).
However, once tempted, we must make a decision. (an act of the will) We must reject, or consent. If we consent, our will is now engaged and we have entered into sin (usually venial [or not unto death])...
next comes action. If we then act upon the sinful thought(s), we risk mortal (unto death) sin which mortally wounds our relationship with God and we must seek forgiveness.
