Psalm 110:1 The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”
Matthew 22:43-45 Jesus said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool"? If David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his Son?”
Many people, even today, struggle with this verse trying to understand who David was referring to with the second Lord when he said, "The LORD said to My Lord".
To understand this verse you must first understand the promise of the coming Messiah. David, speaking by the Spirit in prophetic language, was referring to a future day when the Son of God would be made Lord and Christ through His resurrection.
Ephesians 1:19-21 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.
Acts 2:36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”
Jesus was the son of David in seed form all through the old testament but He did not become David's Lord until after His resurrection. That is when Jesus was given a name above all names and all the angles are called to worship Him.
Philippians 2:5-11 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Hebrews 1:6 But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: “Let all the angels of God worship Him.”
The words, "again brings the firstborn into the world" means He was resurrected. Also, firstborn is not referring to a time before Genesis, but rather, Jesus' firstborn status came as a result of His resurrection.
Acts 13:32-34 And we declare to you glad tidings—that promise which was made to the fathers. God has fulfilled this for us their children, in that He has raised up Jesus. As it is also written in the second Psalm: ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.’ And that He raised Him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, He has spoken thus: ‘I will give you the sure mercies of David.’
Colossians 1:18 And Jesus is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.
Jesus exited in seed form prior to His literal birth through Mary. This is why He was called the son of David.
John 7:42 Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, where David was?”
Jesus was the promised seed all throughout the old testament. Jesus became David's Lord through His resurrection where He was exalted to the right hand of the Father and was given a name above all names. David, inspired by the Spirit, saw Jesus' day as a future event in the same way Abraham saw Jesus' day as a future event and rejoiced.
