  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hello 50 eggs ...

It is also a Holy Day thing... so it is an obligation on every Sunday and every Holy Day of Obligation. The Catechism discusses this under the section on the commandment to observe the Sabbath and more specifically starting at Catechism 2180 to the end of the section. Since it is tied to the ten commandments missing without cause is considered a mortal sin (it is a grave matter, done with full knowledge and consent) which would need to be confessed.  If you're ill, your car won't start and so on that would likely mean it isn't mortal as you can't control those things.

It seems like a chore and legalistic looking at it from the outside. I know it struck me that way initially. I think it is also working to promote the positive, communion (eucharist) and the rest aspect the remainder of the day if possible. That you can't just blow off the Lord's day. They start with discussing the Sabbath, then the resurrection and the Lord's Day and then why it is an obligation.

Here is a bit:

2181 The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin.

Hopefully some can add more on it.  I had it explained to me at some point when I first began converting.  I enjoy going to the Mass, but I do miss sometimes.  I'm iffy about tomorrow... our van had a flat and the temporary spare is on... so I have no spare if something else should happen.

Mass every Sunday is an obligation. But, if you really truly understand what is happening at during the sacrament of the Mass, then you'd be there everyday! It's truly amazing!!!

Exactly.  I can't believe it when people say "Mass is boring, do I really have to go?"  I always think if people really understood what was going on there would be standing room only even at DAILY Mass.

You better believe it buster! EVERY Sunday and Holy Day of Obligation.

Hey- God gave you your life as well as the means to spend eternity with Him. Could we possibily do any less than one hour a week?

Mass is a heavenly banquet, it is a foretaste of Heaven.

In Christ, Patrick

What is the official ruling on the "we must go to mass every sunday" thing?  Is that in the CCC somewhere?  besides the obvious commandment about keeping the sabbath holy, what is the argument/logic behind it?

yup, its a precept of the Church which all Catholics are bound too.
Below is the quote from the Catechism on it:

2042. "The first precept ('You shall attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation.') requires the faithful to participate in the Eucharistic celebration when the Christian community gathers together on the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord.[Cf. CIC, cann. 1246-1248; CCEO, can. 881 # 1, # 2, # 4.]
The second precept ('You shall confess your sins at least once a year.') ensures preparation for the Eucharist by the reception of the sacrament of reconciliation, which continues Baptism's work of conversion and forgiveness.[Cf. CIC, can. 989; CCEO, can. 719.]
The third precept ('You shall humbly receive your Creator in Holy Communion at least during the Easter season.') guarantees as a minimum the reception of the Lord's Body and Blood in connection with the Paschal feasts, the origin and center of the Christian liturgy.[Cf. CIC, can. 920; CCEO, cann. 708; 881 # 3.]"

Its in the Ten Commandments if you look hard enough.

Mass is one hour a week, required. Out of 140 hours in a week, God is demanding less than 1% of your time. Is that too much to ask? Should someone unwilling to do that go to Heaven where they must spend 100% of their time with God?

Hello Christopher Paul,  :)

I think the main concern here is that at some point we all miss a Sunday for one reason or another.  This obviously concerns people when they hear it stated as an absolute knowing that they will eventually fall short.  So they do need to know there are exceptions, or what to do if they do miss without good cause.  They can go Saturday night, or any of the Sunday masses... if they miss and shouldn't have they know that it should be confessed before taking communion again.

Most protestants, especially those coming from an evangelical background, are not averse to going to church every Sunday.  Often they also go on Sunday and Wednesday evenings and attend other church functions.   They read their Bible, they pray... so they do give God time besides that hour a week ... they just worry if they miss a particular hour of a particular day why are Catholics so staunch on that?

Weekends or evenings are the hardest time for me to attend.  Two of my three kids are autistic - the 13 year old is often loud and sometimes aggressive - prior to these last 6 or so months I haven't attended services often in the last 5 or 6 years.  Early in my working towards conversion I was hoping I could go to weekday masses while they are at school and skip Sunday... but now I have started to manage the early Mass on Sunday - 8:00Am is earlier than most even start Sunday school... so I can get in while the guys sleep and leave my oldest boy in charge.  Of course, still the problem I haven't been able to get the oldest boy to church, he did do AWANAS which is Baptist boyscouts for a while.   I have even missed some of the RCIA classes (and didn't attend last year because thought no way I'd make it at all... ) and Father has been very understanding on it.  He also baptized the middle boy the day after I asked because day-to-day I am not sure how much longer I can care for him at home.  He knows somewhat the situation I am dealing with and been very supportive when I miss a class, or a Sunday.

And if 50 eggs is still hanging in with us on this, our local parish does a few Masses a month at the nursing home instead of just taking communion out for them.  I think that is really beautiful he does that for those who can't physically be there but would love to be able to attend mass. :priest:  Then after that he goes on rounds out to shut-ins.

It isn't just always someone isn't willing to give God one little hour out of their week... people can have issues in life that make a particular Sunday difficult to manage to get to church.

Mass boring? How could anyone consider the word of God and communion with God boring?

I feel this is one of the most wonderful gifts of freedom we have, to be able to attend mass daily and on Sundy, which is obligatory.

To attend daily mass, and receive the Eucharist, is the best way to start my day. How can your day get any better that this? I do understand it is not possible for everyone, but I am thankful that I have been able to do so.

I also feel that so many don't take the celebration of Sunday mass and Holy Days as serious as in days past. Everyone is so rushed and in a hurry, that they cannot even give God, 45 minutes for 1 day ,to thank him for his blessings, and for his son dying upon the cross for OUR SINS!

I know there are times when we are ill or our children are ill, or we have car problems and such. But I feel we should make an effort to at least get to Sunday mass. Look what Jesus sacrificed for us!
