  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Okay, so this past Friday my family went and cleaned out my grandmother's house.  (She's living in a nursing home and those who have Power of Attorney over her decided that renting her house would be a better choice then selling it.  My mom is against this...but anyway...)

So one of the things we boxed up was all this stuff my grandmother had in her cedar chest.  And my mom's been going through the stuff trying to see what to save and what to get rid of.  We found 4 Mass Cards that were for my great-grandmother, who died in August, 1987.

Two of them specifically say that the Masses will be said for 15 years, the other 2 don't.

But see...since we're not Catholic...we don't know what to do with these cards now.  So...what do we do?  :)

Thanks for the help in advance!

They're actually cards to be said in memory of my great-grandmother.

And seriously...my grandmother would have no clue what it was all about. She's suffering severely from Alzheimer's...

But maybe my mom could ask her sometime and see what she says. :)

Or maybe you could be like Scott Hahn. He ripped apart his grandmother's Rosary and later turned into a great Catholic theologian? (smile)

I don't know what to tell you. If your Grandmother wished for the prayers can you just throw that away? Maybe you could give them to??? I don't even know if you should give them to a priest. Hmmmm, good question.

All that means is that your GG will be remembered in Masses for 15 years. The Prayers of Petition in every Mass usually include a prayer along the lines of "For all our remembered deceased, including the names written in our Book of Petition, we pray to the Lord....Lord, hear our prayer". In any event, the Masses of Remembrance for her have expired now anyway.

She would have been remembered in the Masses whether the cards exist or not. The cards themselves have no instrinsic physical or spiritual value, although they may have sentimental value for you. So, you can pretty much do with the cards whatever you want----you can keep them as keepsakes, you can give them to whichever relative wants them, you can throw them away. It's pretty much up to you. :)
