I see this debate a lot and I personally like both companies and really would like to see both succeed. I even see the actors in the movies comparing Marvel and DC with some friendly rivalry. Here are some of my thoughts on what we are seeing at the box office.
1. Marvel is providing a better product box office product, by sticking closer to the source material and creating movies with big names and a story that appeals to various demographics with just a few misses on some of the characters and details. They have laid out a plan for movies that tie together and provide interest in future projects.
2. Marvel has been hampered by Fox having the right to many of their characters and Fox has done a poor job with many of the characters in their care. Marvel tends to have more respect for the characters' history and even though they change subtle details, for the most part many are recognizable. Fox has butchered the back stories and personalties of many characters, particularly with the X-men. There are so many discontinuities in their films, I am not sure they can ever reconcile them without reboots. I really wish Fox would let the rights revert back to Marvel, but I think Fox sees the possibility of money to be made.
3. Marvel is leveraging their ties to Disney and ABC television to help their current continuity and interest in the movies.
4. DC has done well with their most recent outings of Man of Steel and the Christopher Nolan Man Batman Movies.
5. DC allowed different directors to apply their vision in many movies and stray too far from recognized character histories. Many of these directors outright ignored known information and tried to put their spin on things. This is much like what Fox did with the X-men. Thank Heaven we never saw the Nicholas Cage version of Superman get made...
6. DC seems to have an edge over Marvel in the quality of their live action television productions, like Smallville, Arrow, and the upcoming Flash TV series, which garners interest in movies.
7. DC also seems to produce higher quality animated movies for DVD- which could translate to more interest at the Box office.
All in all, as a fan of superheroes, I feel that right now the companies are putting out some really good stuff and I look forward to the next few years with what is planned by both.
