I see this debate a lot and I personally like both companies and really would like to see both succeed. I even see the actors in the movies comparing Marvel and DC with some friendly rivalry. Here are some of my thoughts on what we are seeing at the box office.
1. Marvel is providing a better product box office product, by sticking closer to the source material and creating movies with big names and a story that appeals to various demographics with just a few misses on some of the characters and details. They have laid out a plan for movies that tie together and provide interest in future projects.
2. Marvel has been hampered by Fox having the right to many of their characters and Fox has done a poor job with many of the characters in their care. Marvel tends to have more respect for the characters' history and even though they change subtle details, for the most part many are recognizable. Fox has butchered the back stories and personalties of many characters, particularly with the X-men. There are so many discontinuities in their films, I am not sure they can ever reconcile them without reboots. I really wish Fox would let the rights revert back to Marvel, but I think Fox sees the possibility of money to be made.
3. Marvel is leveraging their ties to Disney and ABC television to help their current continuity and interest in the movies.
4. DC has done well with their most recent outings of Man of Steel and the Christopher Nolan Man Batman Movies.
5. DC allowed different directors to apply their vision in many movies and stray too far from recognized character histories. Many of these directors outright ignored known information and tried to put their spin on things. This is much like what Fox did with the X-men. Thank Heaven we never saw the Nicholas Cage version of Superman get made...
6. DC seems to have an edge over Marvel in the quality of their live action television productions, like Smallville, Arrow, and the upcoming Flash TV series, which garners interest in movies.
7. DC also seems to produce higher quality animated movies for DVD- which could translate to more interest at the Box office.
All in all, as a fan of superheroes, I feel that right now the companies are putting out some really good stuff and I look forward to the next few years with what is planned by both.

Oh man, this is potentially a dangerous topic ^_^

I agree with most of your points.
I pretty much love almost all of Marvel Studio's movies. Incredible Hulk and Thor 2 were a little lack luster but I still enjoy them
They're definitely crippled by not having the rights to some of their biggest characters (Spider-man, Fantastic Four, X-Men). I think Spider-Man's fine with Sony (Though I didn't like the Amazing Spider-Man) but the Fantastic Four needs to be in Marvel's cinematic universe.
I really don't care about X-Men to be honest. Lol. The first two movies were decent.

Now, with DC it's more of a mixed bag for me. I thought the original Superman and Tim Burton's Batman were both great. Green Lantern was pretty bad and Man of Steel was alright. The Dark Knight was a wonderful movie, The Dark Knight Rises bored me to death, and I have yet to see Batman Begins.

I don't really watch the animated stuff but just going by what I've heard DC definitely has the heads up there.

As much as I like to pretend I'm neutral on the whole thing, I'm definitely a bigger Marvel fan. I have yet to see a DC movie that made me go "Wow, I want to find out more about this character!" and so I've never been interested in reading any DC comics. That did happen with Marvel, however.

But really, they're all superhero movies so I think the people who are EXTREMELY biased towards one company need to chill.

Batman Begins to me is the best of the Nolan series. It is not as dark in tone as the Dark Knight and I can watch it over and over versus DK. Dark Knight Rises tried to pack too much into one movie and some of the individual character development suffered for it.

I prefer Marvel over DC just because I know more about marvel characters. Only thing I don't like about either is when they clone the other ones character. Such as I love deadpool, but theres a rip off version of him in DC. Granted I am not sure which came first.

I'm not gonna tackle everything, but a couple of your points.

1. They have laid out a plan for movies that tie together and provide interest in future projects.

I bolded the statements here (and in your second point) cause I don't feel their 100% correct - while I'll fully give Marvel credit for more often leaning closer to the comic or amalgamating various back stories (both Thor and The Incredible Hulk had stuff lifted and combined from the mainstream and ultimate line), I can't say they aren't guilty like fox and sony for messing up characters - most of this happens in Marvel's solo cash-cow Iron Man franchise; Iron Man 2 took two separate villains to make the films big-baddy, and Iron Man 3 - look at the just flack the flick has received for it's (mis)treatment of the Manderin character (one of Iron Man's greatest foes in the comics). Is Marvel more consistent than fox/sony? Yes, definitely, but they aren't perfect with their adaptations/changes either.

I (italicized to address what I wanna say here) agree a bit. While I loved X-Men 1 & 2, generally enjoyed First Class, and thoroughly enjoyed the first 2/3rds of the Wolverine (but really don't like Last Stand and flat out hate Origins). However - with the upcoming Day's of Futures Past movie they said they wanna fix up continuity issues between the movies - and honestly - it would just be easier to reboot the thing and start over. There are so many issues between the movies it's gonna be ridiculously difficult to fix it.
Now as for Marvel getting the rights back - here's the thing (atleast my understanding of it, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong) - I don't see why they'd be in any huge rush. Fox produces and releases an X-Men movie and receive most of the profit (and they pay for the flick to be made) - but to my understanding Marvel still makes money from it (not 100% sure on it though) - AND then more people go out and buy the comics which Marvel gets all the profit from. Would I love to see Wolverine show up in Avengers or Gambit done better or Spiderman/DareDevil/Deadpool share a scene? Absolutely! But another studio producing a flick about your character gives you a bit of profit for little/no expense or risk for you.

I agree entirely, and I wish Marvel would do more animated movies (a-la Planet Hulk).

Overall I wish DC would do something - and it seems their finally getting their act together. I don't think the should copy the Marvel/Avengers model - they should springboard off of Bats vs Supes into Justice League: if you do Justice League right, then people will go see the solo Wonderwoman/Aquaman/Green Lantern (2 or Reboot)/Flash flicks.

Sorry for the two posts in a row, but to answer your question - Rob Leifield who created Deadpool (Marvel) ripped him off of Deathstroke (DC) - almost down to the name; Deathstroke's is Slade Wilson. At first Deadpool was a total ripoff. But now he's changed and evolved and become his own character (and one of my favourites at that). Hope that helps haha.

Can someone make a list of which movies are DC, and which ones are Marvel? I keep forgetting.

I'm sure I'm going to miss some but I'll try my best lol

DC (Warner Bros.):
Batman
Superman
Green Lantern
Judge Dredd (I think?)
Jonah Hex
Catwoman

A lot of Marvel characters' movies were made by other studios. Years ago, Marvel Studios was really struggling so they sold some of their film rights to avoid going bankrupt. I'll divide the Marvel movies into their separate studios as well:

Marvel Studios:
Iron Man
Captain America
Thor
The Incredible Hulk
The Avengers
Guardians of the Galaxy (hasn't come out yet)
Howard the Duck (lol)

Marvel (Columbia Pictures):
Spider-Man
The Amazing Spider-Man
Ghost Rider

Marvel (Fox Studios):
Fantastic Four
X-Men
Daredevil
Elektra

Ok, thanks. It's easy to get confused between who belongs in which comic company, especially if I am not familiar with the comics.

If I were DC/Warner Brothers, here is what I would do: (Assuming no limits on budget.)
2016 - Man of Steel Sequel (Superman/Batman) already has hinted at inclusion of Wonder Woman and other Justice League members.
2017 - Justice League movie - Do it like the New 52 start to introduce all of the characters to set up independent movies. Darkseid is the key threat.
2018-2019 - Batman/Superman/Wonder Woman/Aquaman/Green Lantern/Flash solo films. All of these characters can carry independent films and follow up with character development from the 2017 film.
2020 - 2nd Justice League Movie - could be Lex Luthor and Legion of Doom, based on villians set up from the independent movies.
2021+ - Set up different properties from DC and another Batman or Superman film.
- Justice League Dark, Nightwing, Suicide Squad, and other properties come to mind.

i heard the release date of captain america 3 and supermanbatman is the same. but one of them might change their release date, we'll see.

I'm really interested to see what's going to happen with that hahahaha.

I know that Marvel's had that release date planned for a long time but didn't announce what movie it would be. Warner Bros. moved Batman/Superman there a while ago to allow themselves more time for prep and stuff.

I really don't think Marvel's going to budge. Let's be honest, they have a lot less to lose than Warner Bros. They can afford to take a hit at the Box Office with one of their movies since the rest of them have been freakishly successful.
Captain America 2 was great and set up the third movie very well so there's going to be a lot of interest in Captain America 3.

Batman and Superman are basically the 2 most popular superheroes ever, and this is the first time they'll be in a big-budget live action movie together. That right there's enough to guarantee that it's going to make a lot of money.
But at the same time, it's a sequel to Man of Steel which did well at the box office but not as well as the studio was expecting. It also got mediocre reviews and a lot of people were sorta turned off by it.
That along with some controversial casting decisions is kinda creating some mixed feelings about Superman/Batman.

So to summarize, I have no idea what's going to win. Lol

but but but but but i don't think there is any chance of captain america 3 beating supermanbatman. man of steel's domestic opening weekend was $117mill, while captain america 2's opening weekend was $96mill (i just read on imdb). i think the closer box office will be to compare supermanbatman with the avengers.

Yeah I agree, I do think SupermanBatman will ultimately win. They're more popular and it's something the people haven't seen before. Captain America 3 will be the third (or 5th if you count the Avengers movies lol) in Captain America's franchise.
You're right, The Avengers will be a much better comparison. I don't know if it will do Avengers kind of money though: Both BM/SM and Cap 3 are going to lose money opening weekend because of the other.

I personally love Marvel more due to their approach in their movies. Like how they made a cinematic universe without having one franchise name listing on and on. Like James Bond movie 1, 2, 3, 4, 5; they are all with the title "James Bond" but in this, we get to have Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant Man and so on and so forth with their upcoming titles as movie titles. We get to see some badass action, witty lines, fantastic plots and the way they managed to keep it awesome and entertaining without being too jarring to understand. I like how they are keeping a cinematic universe of which they incorporated a television series called "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." within that continuity in which for me happens to be the first time that a TV series increases intercontinuity linkups that those movies have. Like how Ep 1 of AoS is following Iron Man 3, Eps 8 and 9 follows up the events of Thor: The Dark World and as for now, eps 16 is moving onward to be a foreshadowing of Captain America: The Winter Soldier for those who have not yet seen it. And oh yeah! It is going to be so linked with the movie that I cannot give away yet until episodes 17 onward will get aired and the movie passes. I also love that they can make us relate with their characters as to how these people do things in their lives.

DC however, sometimes can get too cynical despite I love Batman and some others out there like the Teen Titans. But hey! I don't want to cause a heated debate... I just want to say what I want to say.
