"It makes no difference if your religion has a hundred requirements, a million requirements, or only one requirement. A requirement is a requirement, and requirements earmark religions. Religion is man standing on his head for God. The truth is that God is standing on His head for man. But people in religions are too busy doing their thing to even notice that God is doing His."
-Martin Zender

"The religious person is constantly working; he has to be good enough to get into heaven and stay there. Notice this about the people you know who are religious: They are fearful. They are afraid that they are a misdeed away from disappointing their Deity. It's a slippery walk and the supposedly angry God has a firm grasp on the edge of the rug. One false move and - whaa-oosh! - out it comes. This kind of fear is not conducive to a peaceful life."
-Martin Zender, "How to Quit Church Without Quitting God"

"Believe in God, no matter what the Clergy say."

Ok. What do you think about those quotes? Don't get me wrong, I love quotes but is this one of those "just put up your favorite Martin Zender quotes" thread, or were you looking for people to discuss these quotes?

Did he define a flip-side to that? Is that opposed to a Spiritual person who trusts God?
I've never read anything by him but it sounds interesting.

Hey Tulc, I recently re-read "How to Quit Church Without Quitting God". It is a very, very informative book. I highly recommend it. This is the review of the book that I made on Amazon:

"I believe that Zender comes up with some good points in this book. His writing is very down to earth and his editorial cartoons are without a doubt, hilarious. I have read this book a dozen times and I get a kick out of it every time I read it. It should turn the religious establishment on it ears. I recommend giving a copy to everyone who is what Zender calls a religionist. If they don't throw the book in the trash at least it will make them think about their religion, which is good.

Christianity is about a relationship with God. It's not about a religion. We have heard this for years, but Zender really explains that it's all about God's sacrifice in order to have a relationship with us. God is so in love with us that he was willing to die on the cross in order to establish that relationship. It' all about God's grace, folks."

Well, what do you think of the quotes I posted?

Thanks - I found his website and started reading around. Really interesting stuff.

I think mainly he's just getting caught up in the connotations those words have acquired in modern society. I mean there are people like that in the world but I honestly think that if it wasn't for religion those people would still find something to be nervous and fearful about. It's an aspect of their personality that's found an outlet in religion.
If we want to call the flipside - Spiritual people - I think we can find alot of those still going to the same church.
I think that the religious, neurotic type are just the type that will draw the most attention and I'd like to believe that we're overestimating how many of those exist in the modern religions but maybe I'm wrong.

BTW, off to go try and find that book at borders this afternoon.
