I lived in Maryland a few years ago, and there was something like 1100-1200 separate benefits that married couples could automatically receive from the various levels of government. Couples who were limited to civil partnership (ie, gay partners) were unable to receive some of those benefits at all, and were only able to access other benefits by hiring lawyers and filing lots of different papers with the various levels of government/courts. These were for things that were automatically granted to marriage partners, but civil union people had to go to a lot of extra time and expense to acquire -- assuming they could get those benefits at all.

I think that clergy often take advantage of vagueness about marriage in order to give the impression that for clergy - as opposed to an official - to marry people is somehow supposedly indispensable.That is still vague.
