  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Well, I'm a junior in high school and plan on joining the Marine Corps right after high school. This has been my dream since 7th grade, I've known quite a few Marines and this is a life that I think I will love. Unfortunately, I have another year and a half to wait before I can join up. don't really know why I posted this thread, i guess maybe to see if i have any commong ground with some of you? any marines, former Marines, or aspiring Marines out there? or maybe your just close to a Marine and what to tell me about it, Please do.

Thanks a lot,
Nick

I'm not completely sure about an MOS, I definitely want to do something technical/electronics. computers are my passion and I know there is always room for more computer geeks in the military;-) haven't been in contact with a recruiter yet, I don't see a point in that till at least next year

Me 2841 (Ground Radio Repair)

Served most of my Time in the 3rd Mar Div (Oakanawa Japan)

1) Sign up in your Junor Year , and your senor year will count towards Time Is Service towards permotions, and your Inactive Reserve time if you leave after 4 Years Active Duty.

2) Go in under a Contract for the MOS you want, unless you want to be a Grunt.

3) If you are planing on being a lifer, you can go for just about any MOS, If you are just going to serve 1 or 2 rounds in the service, choose a MOS that you can transfer to your civilion life. I.E. not much calling for a Grunt in the civilon sector, though the police sector loves grunts :) OTOH, Electronics / Satalite Com Repair can help you in the civilion sector (though you will be spending about a year in 29Stumps (29 Palms Death Vally Ca)

4) Stay in shape, but Keep your Mind even stronger. I saw people who were football stars in H.S. fail, and not make it, but people who came in unable to run a mile, but strong in there spirit, made it. They can build up the body, but the mind is harder to work with.

5) Dont go in there with the attatude that you will teach them anything, but be willing to learn.

or you could do the smart thing and join the AIR FORCE instead...or do you want to be face down in mud all the time???

i would rather be in the air conditioned rooms or going 1.5 times the sound of speed then running around the woods sweating my brains out and trying to find the enemy who could be right in front of your face

I'm a pacifist myself... but I do have many that are dear to me that are in the armed forces. Including the marine corps. A good book to read that was recommended to me by my brother in the marine corps is: "Making the Corps", by Thomas E. Ricks.

I read it, and it helped me to understand more about what the Corps is about and what you can expect. I'm glad I've read it, and I think any marine or future marine will like the book.

My husband is in the Corps. Let's just say I hope you have better experiences than my husband has (he has some real jerks in the squadron that he is stationed to). If you want to be challenged, make this your life, see the world, meet interesting people, gain respect and love, are ready to face some disrespect (from anti-war people who would love to spit in your face)...the list goes on...then go for it! I would recommend the military to people who need a positive change in their life. Just make sure the Marine Corps is the branch that will suit you best!

I've known Marines both as friends and clients.
They're all no nonsense people.

They will break you and build you up as a different
person. If you can handle that you will like the
results.

I will pray you don't have to go to war. No soldier
ever really "wants" to, but understands it's a
necessary thing in the battle of Good vs Evil.

War changes people. Some good, some bad.
Remember who you are.

If you really want to progress in the Marines, get a four year degree first. Yes, I know it will take forever, but you can then be an officer, and that is much better. I know at least 2 Marines, in their late forties, who enlisted at 18. Do you know their ranks? Both Staff Seargents. My dad ( a former enlisted dude) said that all the Generals and Admirals who were former enlistees he could count with one hand.
I myself want to get a degree in Computer Sciences first, then become a Marine officer.

Officer: leads
Enlistee: is led

It's a lot of hard work, going through boot camp for 12 weeks...It's so true, much harder on the mind then the body....He is now a Lance Corp. and doing just fine..and he couldn't be prouder! The Marines changed him for the Best.....I think all 4 branches of Military is great, but I always leaned more for the Marines! Hope my Nephew dosen't read this,he's a Navy guy... lol
