• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Here is what's been going on. I smoked weed and drank coffee and smoked cigarettes, and 5 hour energy drinks from December of last year until May of this year and then quit cold turkey. Three days after I quit I had a major panic attack and went to the emergency room. 5 days later I had another one. For about 3 weeks after my first attack my symptoms were serious anxiety, depression, vivid dreams, sweaty palms/feet/arm pits, confusion, racing thoughts, light-headedness, a feeling of dread quit often, and some depersonalization. since then up till now which is 2 1/2 months later my symptoms are anxiety, some light-headedness, some confusion, and depression. My depersonalization is going away by reading His Word and realizing who I am in Christ now but my symptoms are still very heavy every day. I was 30 pounds over weight when I quit and now I am 10 pounds over weight, I am eating healthy so no more constipation but still feel quite off. Can anyone tell me how long this could last? Is it still in my system making me feel like this or is it just a mental thing at this point? Any help would be much appreciated, I have quit cold turkey on weed a few times in my life but nothing compares to this. One other thing is that smoking weed this time around actually cause me to be anxious instead of mellow. Maybe it was laced, or my brain is simply not having it anymore. HELP.

Hang in there Zach. It might be possible that you have some underlying psychological problem that became more acute when you stopped smoking weed and taking so much caffeine? Lots of time things like that can be covered up with drugs. Caffeine withdrawls tend not to last that long and I'm not really sure about weed but I would be surprised if they lasted for months though. I would assume if you are still having problems from withdrawal it would probably be from the cigarettes. When my mom stopped smoking she felt bad for a long time. I will keep you in my prayers. You might want to try an NA meeting. Just going to them helps me out with my stress and anxiety. It can't hurt to take some good vitamins and amino acids too. I find Picamillon which is GABA bound with niacin to help a little with anxiety too.

Stopping marijuana, cigarettes will do that to you, the physical dependence usually lasts around 3 weeks sweaty palms, anxiety. Then it is dealing with the mental part of it which is not as sever but is still extremely difficult. Drink lots of water, eat well as you have and join a smokers anonymous group. There are some online, and some where you can meet up in person. Soon this will all be behind you, and you will be free. God Bless You!

I'm sorry that you're having trouble. I'll say a prayer for you.

But I need to be honest here, The marijuana and 5 hour energy drinks were the least of your problems. I've never even heard of marijuana withdrawal. And believe me if it happened, I would know. The 5 hour energy is mostly b vitamins. Not sure what high doses of that for long term will do to you, but I don't think it's problem, I could be wrong on that one though.

A friend of mine had anxiety and some other problems when he stopped smoking weed on a daily basis. It might not happen to everyone but it can happen.

5 hour energy shots have 100mg of caffeine as well as L-phenylalanine and L-tyrosine which effect levels of dopamine and adrenaline. I could see how a person who drank them all the time might feel bad if they stopped all of a sudden.

Hang in there. Your symptoms will keep going away as time goes on. After six months you should feel pretty good.

There most definitely is withdrawal symptoms from thc. Some have it worse than others. Depends on your make-up, chemistry and personality. I have gone through it so if it helps you, I know how you feel and it does get much better. Just remember what you are going through. Remembering the misery will help you stay away from it if/when you are tempted to use again. Look to God for deliverance and strength.

Hope this helps. God bless.

hey,

i went threw the same thing. i tried to quit for 4 yrs straight and the longest i went was weeks lol. the lord did some amazing things in my life and i am proud to say i am 1 yr and 2 months sober from drugs and booze. like it says in the bible a man falls down 7 times and gets back up (something like that). when i first quit, time went by so slow. I was soo depressed. Kind of like losing someone close. It was wierd. I was throwing up and crying out of the blue, not eating. I knew i was doing the right thing but withdrawl was killer. I started to occupy my time with the lord and went to church 3 times a week and stopped hanging out with my drug friends. Thats one thing that must be done. Lose your drug friends. It sucks but if u continue to hang with them, you will fall back. Keep your eyes on the lord and read and understand his word. When you complete certain months of sobriety you will be so proud. And after months you will see changings in yourself and then think to yourself: " wow i have really changed" You can do it dude. I did, and i was one of those who thought i would do pot for the rest of my life.

ps. also remove drug songs( snoop, led zepp, the doors) from your listening, and movies too (half baked, harold & kumar etc) that stuff will lead you back to drugs too. god bless brother.

Hey man, I have to say, I'm impressed that you managed to stop all that at the same time. Cigs are rough to let go of since they are so addicting physically. Weed is addicting psychological, which is where some of the anxiety can come from, but won't actually cause physiological problems like the ones you are experiencing and would not effect you anymore after the first few days after quitting. You just might not be used to dealing with things as they come to you. The caffeine withdrawal depends on the amount of caffeine you consumed daily. Nevertheless, it can take weeks to be completely free of that.

This will pass eventually, and if it doesn't, and the mental issues refuse to leave, see someone. You shouldn't deal with this alone, talk to a therapist about this.

Anyone who has ever smoked cannabis knows that the effects can be physical and so can the withdrawal.

The brain is considered the controlling factor of everything in your body, so psychological and physical are very closely linked together.

Having used all of the above mentioned myself except for 5-hour energy shots, I think I can give you a general idea. The headaches and anxiety are probably from quitting the massive amounts of caffeine. The same symptoms with the addition of lightheadedness and depression can come along for quitting marijuana. Praying that you will be peaceful and healthy. May God bless you!

From personal experiences i know exactly how you feel. It isnt the weed though it cause paranoia when high but not sober or withdraws will cause this.
Its the Caffeine and nicotine not the weed i promise that much.

When someone you don't know promises you something, a red flag should be raised.

Cannabis is know to increase one's chance of becoming paranoid, especially in those who are prone to that in the first place.

Thanks for all the replies brothers,

It's been just over 4 months now and many of my symptoms have gone away but the anxiety is still pretty heavy. It's almost like my confidence when down the hole or something. Anyways I am going to make every effort to get my confidence in the Lord and put on the new man and walk in the power of this new life in Christ. He gave me a spirit of power and of love and of a sound mind and it's about time I took Him at his Word.

God bless-

Sounds a little like caffeine withdrawls. I have had those before, be prepaired for headaches and drink lots of water to flush the toxins out. Sometimes if you drink green tea because it has a mild ammout of caffeine in it you can ween yourself off it so its not as sickening.

Also marajuana (THC) is not physically addicting so you don't withdrawl. You may miss it and want it but your body is not going to have reactions.

This is good advice.

Get thee hence, Satan!!! Stop tormenting this person with your devil-weed!

Alright, now let's get serious. There is no withdrawal from Marijuana. You're under the influence, all right - of government-sponsored propaganda. My guess is that you got so carried away with the idea of Marijuana being harmful that psychosomatic symptoms followed suit after you dropped it, that and a combination of caffeine-withdrawal. How many 5-hour energy drinks did you have every day? Because I used to do those too, when I was in college. I would miss sleep for several days on end. You know what sleep deprivation can do to a person? 1 or 2 days without sleep, you start to hallucinate. 3 days, you really start to hallucinate. 16 days, your body shuts down. I can only begin to imagine the damage those energy drinks have had on your heart.

When I was a teenager, I used to smoke weed nearly every day. After quite a few years, I quit, and had no physical withdrawal.

So I agree with the above statement. If your anxiety levels are way up it's from the withdrawal of nicotine (mostly). Caffeine withdrawal causes headaches.

Edit: Lots of refined sugar or HFCS (as found in energy drinks) causes the loss of certain B vitamins - which can also contribute to anxiety and certain mental disorders.
