  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Have I?

"...Accept the things to which fate binds you, and love the people with whom fate brings you together, but do so with all your heart..."

Nope, never... :D

I have read through it, and a lot of what he wrote makes a lot of sense on a philosophical level.

Stoicism is an interesting philosophy, and one similar to my own. While I'm not a Stoic, I recognize Stoicism as one of the great contributions to ethical thought. It also seems very similar to Christianity, and I often wonder if Stoicism, or its mother Cynicism, was an influence on the New Testament.

I've read some of it. I agree with Pierre Hadot that Marcus Aurelius was practicing spiritual exercises in writing his Meditations. His "meditations" were actually exhortations to himself. He wanted to change his perception of life in accordance with Stoic doctrine. He was trying to adopt a characteristically Stoic attitude towards life.

I find his spiritual exercises very odd and unappealing at times, but I understand what he was trying to do.

Yeah there's definitely Stoicism in Christian thought. Probably one of the main contributing philosophies.

As to Marcus Auralius, I like his writings, because they are brief and to the point. But for a more in-depth study of Stoicism, I'd recommend Epictetus' discourses, which is where Aurelius got most of his ideas. I found the teachings of Epictetus to be a much more thorough and complete exposition of Stoic thought.

I began my philosophical journey with Stoicism. I still have a deep fondness for it.
