  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Mandela memorial interpreter asks forgiveness, calls himself champion - CNN.com
Sort of what you would expect given the state of SA...

But the national director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa sees it differently. He said Jantjie had been dubbed a "fake interpreter."
"The deaf community is in outrage," said Bruno Druchen. "He is not known by the Deaf Community in South Africa nor by the South African Sign Language interpreters working in the field."
The man showed no facial expressions, which are key in South African sign language, and his hand signals were meaningless, Druchen said. "It is a total mockery of the language," he added.

You seemed pleased over this as if it serves your agenda of some sort.

This interpreter claimed to be schizophrenic. I think whomever hired him for the job are to blame for not vetting him prior to this all important event.
If he is a fraud I'd hope the laws in South Africa would permit prosecution of not only the interpreter, but that one or those many, who retained his services. It is the ultimate in disrespect not only for the solemness of the occasion, but to the entire community of deaf persons. In South Africa and all over the world as they watched this televised event.

Yeah I just read this awhile back. He claims mental illness & he has done this before making nonsensical movements. If he is mentally ill & his record of doing this before, the fault lies with those that hired him. He was very close to the president & other important figures....not a good idea but I guess you get what you pay for. I think he was paid 87.00 for his 'services'.

One thing for sure, he should be eternally ashamed for how he achieved his 15 minutes of fame. And so too should those who allowed him that.

How did they find him as an interpreter in the first place? What? No test? :doh:Let's just take his word for it that he knows how to sign.

No pun intended, this was a one time event. All that Mandela meant to the people of South Africa, and the ceremony commemorating his life and paying respects to his passing is marred by this failure. A failure that in many respects overshadows the event itself for the enormous insult it afforded to all who watched and know sign language and saw this fiasco commence.

No respect was shown in electing to have this person serve that post. How do they not check to see if this man knows sign language? How did they even think he was qualified in the first place? A man getting that close to the President of the United States and other heads of state that were there, and no one cared to check him out prior?

Unbelievable!

Yeah. Pretty much how I feel. If the guy is suffering from mental illness as he said...I just lay it in the laps of those that hired him.

Jim! Calm down. Why so defensive?

I'm not being defensive.

But the story didn't take long to end up as a thread in OBOB.

Why? The man is sick.

How does this story help us in our Christian journey ?

Yikes.
Kinda of odd he hasn't been convicted of any of those charges.
Seems they need a much better system for mentally ill defendants rather than just letting them off(assuming that's what happened of course), especially seemingly repeatedly.

Sounds like he needs serious help.

He wasn't armed, what was he going to do, fight the President? Throw a shoe at him? I briefly met President Bush at an airport. I was not "vetted" or interviewed by the Secret Service.

Was he still the president when you met him?
