The council had stated that it had done nothing more pleasing to God than to punish the Bohemian heretic. Huss was judged an heretic because he believed in the authority of the Bible above the pope and Canon Law. He believed that Salvation from sin was by Grace through Faith in Christ Jesus alone.
-from the logos site above.

He got burned for that!! It's impossible not to be sarcastic after reading that so I'll shut up.

From an Anglican site

PRAYER (traditional language):

O Almighty God, who didst give to thy servant Jan Huss Boldness to confess the Name of our Savior Jesus Christ before the rulers of this world, and courage to die for this faith: Grant that we may always be ready to give a reason for the hope that is in us, and to suffer gladly for the sake of the same our Lord Jesus Christ; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
PRAYER (contemporary language):

Almighty God, who gave to your servant Jan Huss
Boldness to confess the Name of our Savior
Jesus Christ before the rulers of this world, and courage to
die for this faith: Grant that we may always be ready to give
a reason for the hope that is in us, and to suffer gladly for
the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with
you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

For what it's worth:

The Vatican Information Service (VIS) reported that on Dec 17th, 1999, Pope John Paul II made the following apology regarding the burning at the stake of Hus, while speaking before an international symposium on Jan Hus held at the Vatican:
"Today, on the eve of the Great Jubilee, I feel the need to express deep regret for the cruel death inflicted on Jan Hus and for the consequent wound of conflict and division which was thus imposed on the minds and hearts of the Bohemian people."

as an aside, there is also quite an interesting miltary history to the time as well. His top general was a man named John Ziska. A brilliant tactician, he routed numerous crusader armies and professional soldiers with a largely peasant army through the use of weapons that were well ahead of their time. The most notorious were his "tanks". Essentially he made armored wagons with canons in them that were dragged to a strategic spot, then defended or else dragged offensively through enemy lines, shooting as they went. He never lost a battle and forced the hand of the church and the empire. Quite an amazing story... anyways... Search for John Zizka on google and you will find out a lot about him....

The second website has the following quote:

The council had stated that it had done nothing more pleasing to God than to punish the Bohemian heretic. Huss was judged an heretic because he believed in the authority of the Bible above the pope and Canon Law. He believed that Salvation from sin was by Grace through Faith in Christ Jesus alone.
How far back did this belief go? The second article mentions something about Augustine, but isn't very clear about it.

When did the Catholic Church stop the policy of sentencing heretics to be burned? Was it stopped because the Church ordered it to be stopped?

Did the Orthodox Church have similar problems and situations?
