A man desecrated the main altar of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican by climbing on top of it and throwing six candelabras that were on the altar to the ground, according to the Italian news agency ANSA.

After throwing the candelabras, the man began to remove the altar cloth, as can be seen in a video posted on social media. The subject was then quickly detained by security agents.

I don't really understand the inaction of bystanders. Sure there is plenty of security but they didn't even get close to him until it was all over. I would've rushed the guy the moment he started to climb on to the altar. My opinion that laymen ought to physically fight back against sacrilege, desecration and blasphemy may or may not be condemned by the hierarchs but I won't abide those things if they're happening in front of me.
