Making a World

After thinking long and hard I realized I do not know much about building a society. I have a planet with continets and oceans and moons. I have over two dozen warring races ranging from bipeds to uh, no-legpedscratch. I have just went to the library and checked out a bunch of books on different religions so I can make some of my own so thats checked. But I still have the feeling I'm missing a lot to the world. Can someboy help me build my world?

Even a minimal grasp of politics helps; it decides how each of your societies will be governed, who has the power, how that power can be used or eradicated. Tribal societies with little technology work differently to urban societies with lots of technology - or whatever combination you care to use. It may impact on your religions as well.

Politics are very important. Who rules each world? How did he or she come to power and why? What political philosophies are commonly held by the people? What philosophies are conisdered radical, and which ones are considered more conservative? What kind of governments are in place, and how did those systems come to be? Most of this won't make it into your novel, but it's good to know. Knowing your world inside and out makes for a more convincing story.

My advice would be to study different systems of government. Find out how our government works. Read up on dictatorships--Communist, Fascist, and everything in between. Learn how a theocracy works. And don't just learn about the good parts; read up on the good, the bad, and the ugly. It might seem like a daunting task at first, but if you're like me, then you'll find you actually like learning about different forms of government.

1, What is the highest level of tech on your world?
2, What is the average lifespan of an average individual on your world?
3, Is medical care based on treating the body or defeating the illness?

Thanks for the info so far. Funny, no sooner did I leave the library yesterday did I regret not grabbing a book on governments and stuff like that.

As for Solomon Kane's questions:

1. Varies depending on which nation we're talking about, with the UE having around mid 1900's level technology (although some is a lot more advanced and some is actually far behind). Everyone else is leveled at 1600's level tech or lower.

2. Human lifespan can be as long as 70 years. Other races may live longer or shorter.

It is on the earth at a distant time

First: Space and the planet from a distance, and general terrain and topographical features
Second: Flora and Fauna
Third: Culture and Society (Neutral).
Fourth: the Evil and Corruption (Antagonistic elements)
Fifth: Rescue and Good Character (Protagonist elements)
Sixth: The CONFLICT between those two
Seventh: more of the good guys features
Eighth: How it looks when the story ends
