Good Day,

What was Luther looking for from Rome, that Rome could not provide to him?

“But let me tell you, that if you can convince me that the papacy meets the three requirements I have shown…then I will consider the papacy as a work of God, submitting to it, and deeming it a work of God” (Martin Luther, “Concerning Rebaptism”

Are they related to this?


“The issue in the controversy over the papacy is that the pope boasts that he’s the head of the church and condemns all who don’t live under his power, for he says that although Christ is the [spiritual] head of the church, there must nevertheless also be a bodily head on earth. (I would gladly have conceded this to the pope if he had only taught the gospel)”

What exactly are you asking?

Luther wanted the Papacy to remake itself in his image, what he thought it should be. . when it wouldn't, he rebelled against authority . .

It is very interesting that in the quote above the issue wasn't REALLY that the pope was the physical head of the Church . .. Luther said he didn't have a problem with that . . he would gladly conceeded this if only the pope taught the gospel as LUTHER saw it . .
