Scripture
41He walked away, about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed,
42“Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”
43Then an angel from heaven appeared and strengthened him.
Observation
Jesus is in agony in the garden before he is betrayed and arrested. Jesus uses this time to pray.
Application
This pinged me because I struggle with pray. At times I feel as though I am not praying for the right things. Other times I feel like I have nothing to say. Still other times I feel like there is so much to say I am overwhelmed and cannot even start. This pray from Jesus when He is in the garden is a prayer I have been leaning on a lot more lately. I've been using it as a model - Just pray whatever is on my heart. If I'm happy, tell God that. If I'm scared, tell Him that. If I'm overwhelmed, tell Him that. This helps me get my pray going, but in verse 43 when it says an angel appeared and strengthened Him, that keeps me praying. I can pray, and my prayers are not useless. God will strengthen me. In fact when things are not going well and I pray as suchto God, I add in at the end a request for an angel to come and strengthen me! Requests for wisdom and requests for strength; these are requests God likes to grant correct? Regardless of what happens though, Jesus has shown us by his prayer in garden a great model for our own prayer life.
