  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

27 And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked.
28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.
-- Luke 11:27-28

The NAB footbnotes say this:

"8 [27-28] The beatitude in Luke 11:28 should not be interpreted as a rebuke of the mother of Jesus; see the note on Luke 8:21. Rather, it emphasizes (like Luke 2:35) that attentiveness to God's word is more important than biological relationship to Jesus."

This is a common one to bring up in discussions regarding the status of Mary in the Church . . her special place and being full of Grace . .

But I want to thank you for using this translation of the verse, because it is one that nore closely captures the original Greek.

The response of Jesus is "YEA rather" . . this is his first response . . it is in agreement with her . . "Blessed is . . . . "

So Jesus FIRST AFFIRMS what this woman just said about His mother . .

This could be translated "So then at least" "Yea doubtless" "Yea verily"

These are affirmations of what the woman just said . .

He then goes on to say that Blessed are they that hear the word of God and keep it . .

Now, who of those of whom Jesus is speaking to the woman has heard the word of God and kept it most perfectly?

What did Mary say when the Angel came and announced to her that she would bear Jesus?

She said . . "Be it done unto me according to thy word"

She most perfectly submitted to the word of God ..

This statement of Jesus holds her forth as an example and challanges us to be like her . .

Peace in Him!

Beautiful answer, therese
Elizabeth also answers this question for us in Luke 1:45, when after the annunciation, she greets Mary with joy and then filled with the Holy Spirit Elizabeth says:
"Blessed is she who believed that the promise made her by the Lord would be fulfilled"
Mary is also blessed because she believes.

We believe in. amd hold to the fullness of faith as handed down by the apostles to the Church and as transmitted by the Early Church Fathers, denying no part of it . .

As part of this, one of the bigget and most notable differences is the Real Presence in the Eucharist, in communion . . that Jesus is really, truly present, flesh and blood, soul and divinity, in bread and wine, consecrated at the hands of a priest validly ordained in Apostolic Succession . . This the Early Church believed and this we hold to today. :)

Only in those Churches which have valid Apostolic Succession can this consecration occur, where the bread and wine is changed into the body and blood of Christ . .

From there, the differences depend on the particular protestant church or denomination . .

I hope that helps to give a starting place . . please feel free to ask us about our faith. we are always happy to help others understand what we really believe and why. :)

Peace in Him!

about 3 verses down it says " the time will come that you rejoice that are barren " the destruction of Jerusalem

the blessing is not in the mother , but in the son & belief in the son is the source of the blessings of the father ....

Hello therese,

Could you explain to me what Greek word in Luke 11:28 could (or should) be translated as an affirmation, and from what resources you come to this conclusion?

Thanks,

~Jason
