This story is true, which means it will take a while to write, because I am watching the next part happen every day. Feel free to post comments.
Clara looked up, as someone strolled into the band room. Was it them? But no; it was just Lindsey, with her colorguard flag. Where were they? If they didn't show up soon, who knew what would happen.
At first there had only been hints, but now it was obvious; Sarah and Eric were girlfriend/boyfriend. They were the most unlikely couple in the entire school; Sarah was a strong Christian, a baptist, the type of girl that would make sure that kids didn't swear around her. Eric on the other hand, was not saved, and was very sarcastic. Of course, they were one of the main topics for Sarah's friends, of whom Clara was one, and the gossip never stopped. Some of it was hurtful; a loudmouth, only child, named Rachel, had started talking about how Sarah's "halo was quite perfect, and Erics was...well...tarnished." When Sarah found out about that, she came the closest to hitting Rachel that Clara had ever seen.
Now it was homecoming week, and the band was about to start practicing for the halftime show in the homecoming football game tomorrow night. As Clara had rushed into the band room, a little late, Carrie had run over to her. "Have you seen Sarah? I was supposed to tell her when her mom came, and now her mom's here, and I can't find Sarah. Last I saw she was with Eric, and Kaitie and I have looked all over the school."
Clara frowned. "No, I haven't seen her. Can't you just tell her mom that she is with Eric?"
"No," Carrie sounded, and looked, frantic, "if her mom has any idea that she's dating him, then she will force Sarah to switch schools, just because he isn't a Christian."
"Really? That's crazy." It probably sounded more crazy to Carrie, than it did to Clara, since Clara was a Christian. Of course, Clara didn't have to worry about the whole switching schools thing, since she was homeschooled, and only came to the public school for three classes. Her parents might pull her out of the classes she was in, but that was it, and they probably wouldn't anyways.
"I know, and I still can't find her. What am I going to tell her mom?" But there wasn't enough time to do anything more; Mr. Snow was ready for them to begin warming up. Carrie, and Clara grabbed their flugal horns, and went to stand over by Rachel and Anna, two other hornists. Sarah and Eric were still missing, and every time someone peeked their head into the room, Carrie, Anna, and Clara would glance anxiously at them, to see if it was Sarah or Eric, but never was. Even when it was time to march over to the football field to practice their formations, the "lovebirds" hadn't shown up. Carrie was getting more and more aggitated, and wouldn't stop talking to Clara about what might happen. Clara on the other hand, was mostly lost in her thoughts. Sarah's lying to her mom? The model Christian girl in this school is lying to her mom? But soon, she had to concentrate all her mind on moving at the right time, as the band played Hard Days Night. During a few measures of rests, Clara noticed the bright points of light that reflected off instruments, and looking over, saw Sarah and Eric walking hand-in-hand onto the football field. She nudged Carrie. "There they are."
Others noticed too, and when the song was done, a bass clarinet player named Alisoun pointed the couple out. "Look, aren't they cute."
Sarah met up with the other flugal horn players at the edge of the field, while Eric went to join the other tubas. "Where have you been?" Carrie asked, relievedly. "Your mom was here, and we couldn't find you."
"Eric, and I were back by the new gym." Sarah said calmly. "We heard Kaitie calling, and I called back, but I guess she didn't hear me."
"Did your mom see you?"
"I don't think so, but it was dark out, and we couldn't see." Sarah glanced back towards the parking lot.
For the next forty-five minutes, things went pretty smoothly; they played, and then prepared to stay for the Pep Rally, and the bonfire. As soon as the band was finished playing, Sarah's mom arrived, and Sarah left with her. Eric almost went after them, so he could talk to her mom, but at the last minute, he chickened out, and came back to Carrie, Kaitie, and Clara.
When the Pep Rally was over, Clara followed Kaitie and Carrie to the band room, so they could put their instruments away. Kaitie and Carrie were going to go tping that night, along with half the school. Carrie's backpack was full of saran wrap, and she planned on saran wrapping Mr. Snow's truck before she left. He caught on quickly though. "Don't even think about tping my car." he called out after them.
"Not tp, saran wrap." Carrie called back jokingly. He rushed after them, and the two girls ran off giggling, as Clara smiled, and walked home.
Upon reaching her front door, she heard a voice from above calling, "Clara, is that you?" It was just her brother, Jason, who was sitting up with her two youngest siblings, ready to ward anyone who attempted to tp their house by throwing water balloons down on them.
"Yeah, it's me." she called back, before opening the front door, and going inside. "Mom?" she called out, glancing in the kitchen for her mother.
"Up here." her mom replied from upstairs. Clara ran up the green shag carpet stairs, and into her parent's room. "How did the Pep Rally go?" Deb Ricklefs asked, turning around in her computer chair.
"It went pretty well," Clara replied, collapsing onto the bed, "The bonfire was great, and it wasnt too cold out." She fiddled with her sweatshirt sleeves for a moment before starting, "Mom, did you know that Sarah and Eric are dating?"
"Sarah and Eric?" Deb exclaimed. "That's an unlikely couple."
"I know." Clara said, before spilling the entire story to her mom. "What should I do?" she asked when she had finished.
"Well, I think all you can do is pray for them." her mom said thoughtfully. "And try to be there for Sarah."
Clara nodded. "Yes, Mom."
