  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My new family counselor is promoting this style of parenting? Anyone have any experience/opinions?

I've never heard of this b4, just looked it up on the web.
it sounds legit and Jim Fay seems to have the education behind him to know what he's doing. but in my opinion, i think parenting is a lot more subjective than what can be put in a book.
I think every family dynamic is different, each child is different, each parent is different, and each relationship is different. too many variables for a cookie-cutter approach.
I would take from it what i could use and disregard the rest. :)

We started to learn it. From what I can tell, it's a good tactic for rationale children, when they are rationale. It doesn't seem very effective outside of that. We have some mentally ill and disabled children where bad consequences don't seem to serve effectively as a deterrent. But, where it DOES work, it certainly seems worthwhile and fits with Biblical values such as,

"Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord." Eph. 6:4

my counselor did say it was good for children who were not able to be addressed in typical ways (I'm sure autistic would qualify as that). Her kids were severely emotionally abused before she married their dad (step-kids) and she could not do any of the typical discipline tactics without them being really upset.

So, I asked her what she liked about the book. She said it expands on parenting methods that encourage intrinsic motivation because it helps one's child understand the why's to a situation and not just "do as I say" (blind obedience) parenting styles.

kewl
i saw that too
i've been trying to do some little things with Randi and she seems to be responding

like: either you can come with me into the living room or you can go in your bedroom but you cannot stay in mommies room (she and i have had numerous disagreements about whether my room is public domain).
she hops right up and either goes with me or to her room

it's nice
