I know that if you are a loyal fan of the show Lost, this will shock you, but I've never watched the show.

That is, until the other day.

We had the DVD out from the library and were watching the pilot. And we didn't even have time to watch that much of the pilot before we had to return it. We only got to the exploration of the front of the plane and the short time the 3 people had with the pilot. (Trying not to give anything away for someone like me who has never seen the show).

So, here's the thing. This show starts off very violently. No surprise, even to me, I knew already it involved a plane crash.

I found it interesting and very frightening. Overwhelming at times, which I'm sure is intended.

Is the show ALWAYS like this, every show? It had a real feel of Jurassic Park about it. Or even Aliens. Tons of tension. I do like those kinds of movies, but only once in a while.

The concept looks SO interesting to me, but I don't know that I want a real roller coaster ride with each and every show. And so much blood and guts.

So, I think you get my drift.

Without giving the show away to me, can you broadly catorgorize it's overall approach to story-telling?

Thanks for all your help.

No, all of those shows are not like that. Most of them are "backstories", what happened to the crash victims before they were on the plane.
There are intense moments. It is a thinking person's show if you are aware of details. Well-written, moving, riveting and entertaining!!

Agreed, it's not a lot of blood and guts at all. Not that violent, although people do die sometimes in shocking ways. It is an intense show at times, especially once you get into it. An edge of your seat kind of show.

I definitely think you should get into it! *nudge nudge* Whatcha waitin' for?? *nudge nudge* ;) :D

Thanks for the comments you guys... what am I waiting for?

Oh, I don't know, maybe the other shows I already follow like Idol have been taking up a bit of my time and maybe some other things in life.

I really like what I'm seeing so far, but I can only take so much intense stuff - I tend to have enough of it in my real life. I'm never bored, let's just put it that way.

I do like a "thinking" story, as you posted above. My son had watched a bit more of the dvd and said he didn't think it was "my kind of show".

I like mystery, with twists and turns.

So, that sound good, so far. Thought maybe we could catch up during the summer months by watching the past episodes, which I assume one really needs to do to really understand the show.

Anyone else with some thoughts, please.

Thanks for the help.

If you really want to get into it, I suggest renting or buying Season 1 on DVD before watching Season 2...you have to see every episode in order to fully understand the show. (Even though Season 2 is better, IMO :D ))

Not to say that the show's not pretty intense (there is some blood, a little language, and some other questionable stuff) but the show doesn't revolve around that. It's mostly character development, which is awesome.

So, if you like mystery-type shows with strong, human characters, then Lost is a great show. I do suggest getting into it.

Thanks again for the comments, keep them coming if you have anything to add.

It's funny because even as a person who hasn't watched the show, I've heard some general things that people discuss about it.

Such as if it's really real at all - in the story that is.

I do like a mystery. Will have to see about buying or renting it.

I noticed that Lost Season 2 is going to be released in October of this year.

Is this a show that will re-start in September or one that's next season will start in January?

I have 2 years to catch up on, I guess. It is only 2 years, right?

Thanks for keeping any comments coming my way!

The third season will premiere sometime in September. The Season 2 DVD release is slated for October, but there is buzz that will change. They usually like to release the DVD before the new season so people have a chance to catch up. I'm hearing rumors of an August release.

So, I have a LOT of catching up to do...guess I'll check out Blockbuster.

So, how about some more comments on the nature of the show itself. Or has everything that could be said without giving stuff away been said?

And I thank you all again!

Hm....well, I can't say too much without giving away the entire show. It's very intricate, and the characters are very complex. Some of the characters are kind of New Age-y, but there are several Christians in the show (in Season 2, there's a very strong Christian who's a main character). The show is kind of violent in some points, but usually nothing over-the top, and if a character dies a horrible, bloody death, all they usually show is the aftermath. I can only recall one or two characters who die bloody deaths in Season 1. Most of the show's intensity comes from the emotional intensity--the action, the suspense, the relationships between the characters.

I hope I answered your questions without giving away too much :)

I love the show... yes it can be intense... but it is definitely well written. Once you are a lostie...you are always a lostie. The only thing I would say is don't get too attached to any of the characters as the writers are not afraid to "off" a season regular or someone who is beloved by the audience... it is what give this un-real show a sense of reality and the fact that no-one is safe.

Hmmm... What might be termed `fate' or `coincidence' plays a big role. There are a lot of surprising connections between the various characters and people in the characters past. ANd all too often a characters past comes back to haunt them in the present. There is also a mild `quasi-supernatural' element to parts of it that ties directly into the `fate'/`coincidence' stuff. Some of the characters have some very dark deeds in their past; others have surprising or unusual events. Some of the characters seem bent on reform or `doing the right thing', others appear to be locked in downward spirals.

The island is loaded with mysteries as well - but (frustratingly) the characters seem little inclined most of the time to investigate them. Those who ...seem to have clues about some of this ... tend to be uncooperative and/or vanish in a hurry. (Two quasi spoilers).

Uh huh...well I do like a THINKING show, as do my husband and son. So, we'll probably try to keep chipping away at it.

I was just really worried after watching about 1/2 hour of the pilot - let's face it, there's some really shocking things there involving the plane on the ground, it you get my meaning.

I'm trying not to give things away from the little bit I saw.

I just couldn't take a steady diet of that!

I am so excited for you ... make sure you join the LOST threads... we are a big loving bunch... of Losties...

Thanks for the warm invitation! :groupray:

I don't know that there is a thread to discuss ONLY the first season, is there? Even that's going to take a LONG time for us to get through, as we have a busy summer ahead, and we're planning to chip away at the show.

So, we've finished the first part of the pilot for the series and have started into the second part a bit.

We're all coming up with LOTS of questions, I can tell you that.

Perhaps that's the nature of the show.

So, thanks again for the Lostie invite. I'm hoping to join in at some point, as you can tell I love to chat!
