Lost in Translation ....

I was communicating with a person at another message board and they proclaimed that the Latin words "pro multis" is better translated "for all". I had never heard this before.

In the Eastern Catholic Church and in the Eastern Orthodox Church, we use the same "words of institution" with minimal translational differences:

Take, eat:
this is My Body which is broken for you,
for the remission of sins. ...

Drink ye all of this:
this is My Blood of the New Testament,
which is shed for you and for many
for the remission of sins.

The Tridentine Mass of 1962 has the words:

ACCIPITE, ET MANDUCATE EX HOC OMNES.
HOC EST ENIM CORPUS MEUM.

Take and eat ye all of this,
For this is My Body. ....

ACCIPITE, ET BIBITE EX EO OMNES,
HIC EST ENIM CALIX SANGUINIS MEI,
NOVI ET ATERNI TESTAMENTI:
MYSTERIUM FIDEI:
QUI PRO VOBIS ET PRO MULTIS
EFFUNDETUR IN REMISSIONEM PECCATORUM.

Take and drink ye all of this,
For this is the Chalice of My Blood
of the new and eternal Testament,
the Mystery of Faith,
which shall be shed for you and for many
unto the remission of sins.

I would add, that the words "is shed" and "shall be shed" can cast a different meaning on these statements too.
