Lost Hymns

Sometimes, I think it is sad how some great old hymns just never seem to be sung anymore. They get dropped from newer hymnals, and just seem to fade into oblivion. Whatever happened to great songs like "The Ninety and Nine"?

Can anyone think of others that just don't seem to be sung anymore?

There's a lot of songs that we sang in the church I grew up in, that I never hear any more. Mainly because the church we go to now doesn't use the same hymnal. But I love the old songs from my childhood and enjoy remembering them. I love just looking through the old hymnals at the songs that I remember from my childhood (I'm talking like an "old" person, I know! )...its very peaceful to me.

Jesus, I My Cross Have Taken

~I can't seem to find this in many hymnals, sadly.

I'd never heard of "The Ninety and Nine," so I looked up the lyrics. Powerful stuff!

I haven't heard this one sung in a service in many a year. I do have it on a vinyl record album by Tennessee Ernie Ford. If you would like to here the melody, go to http://cyberhymnal.org/htm/n/i/90_and_9.htm but it is a little faster than I like it.

What ever happened to "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere"? Not the deepest in theology, but still so lovely!

Here is another that is left out of almost every modern hymnal:

The Lewis Family have this song on several different CDs, though its a live recording and they have fun with it, so its not a completely serious rendition of it. Anyway, that's where I first heard the song, but we also sang it in church.

At one time there were many songs that refered mom's faith, supported by the Bible. Here is one of them (if you do not know this one, just read the words):

Perhaps this one is not so much forgotten, just not sung in many churches as it is simply not included in most hymnals.

Does anyone's church still sing this old song?

Come And Dine

Another beautiful hymn that is left out of many more modern hymnals. But the Nazarene church put this one BACK into their latest hymnal ater dropping it from the 1970's hymnal.

I've heard "Come and Dine" and "Eastern Gate" at a small country church in central Ohio. It's a shame more of these old hymns are being lost. I've seen several of Fannie Crosby's hymns that I've never heard of only read in old, old hymnals.
