I haven't been here a while so I hope I don't step on any toes in this forum.

I am trying to compile a list of popular, highly recognizable secular songs that either have, or could be construed as having a spiritual message.

They can be motivational, uplifting, socially conscious, folksy...anything with a positive message. They can be any era, but the more current the better.

I need the most help in the R&B and Hip-Hop departments because I can't really stand to listen to those stations for very long. No offense, just my taste.

Thanks for all your help in advance.

Right on! I was going to post this very thing!

Crazy Love by Van Morrison--I often refer to God as she so the lyrics are spot on for me

Hands by Jewel

Let it be-Beatles

I'm yours -Jason Mraz

Save Me - Dave Mattthews

I'll add more later!

Some artists that I've heard positive messages from in their lyrics are:

Matisyahu
Jewel
Arrested Development

Others that contained a refreshing element of [profound] truth, though perhaps not as uplifting:

Tool, Vicarious
Nine Inch Nails, Head Like a Hole ("Bow down before the one you serve; you're going to get what you deserve" - ugh, so true!)
Linkin Park, Somewhere I Belong
Bad Religion, Punk Rock Song

Blah, let me look through my music collection for this! lol

thanks guys, there are several I hadn't thought of on here. Once I get a larger list, I'll post it complete.

btw - "profound" lyrics will work. anything to make christians think about how they are REALLY executing Jesus' teachings.

It's helpful if all the lyrics are clean, but not completely necessary.

- India.Arie is another good one.
- Linkin Park (I know I mentioned them earlier, but they have a LOT of songs that are quite profound in lyrical content)
I feel like Mudvayne, Disturbed and Muse are good ones, too...

Gosh, I think I was mentally compiling a list yesterday as I was listening to my playlist... but today was kind of like a Monday so it kinda *whewped* right out. I'll find some more for you.

I don't know how "highly recognizable" some of these will be, and I have a broad definition of spiritual songs, but here's my list:

"Closer to Fine" and "Hey Jesus" Indigo Girls (most anything by them, actually)
"Which Way Are You Going?" Jim Croce
"What If Jesus Comes Back Like That?" Collin Raye
"Change" Fishbone
"Turn Turn Turn" The Byrds
"Circle" Harry Chapin
"Heaven's Here on Earth" Tracy Chapman
"Get Together" Youngbloods
"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" U2, Rattle & Hum version especially
"Swimming to the Other Side" Pat Humphries
"Imagine" John Lennon
"Signs" Tesla
"A Much Better View of the Moon" Modern Man
"River" Bill Staines

Melanie C's I Turn to You

It just gets a little fuzzy where she says:

"I hope someday if you've lost your way.
You could turn to me like I turn to you."

It depends how you take the song. If you're thinkin' "I turn to God," that part's not gonna work. If you thinkin' "brother/sisterhood," it totally does.

Nina Simone, Sinnerman
Pearl Jam, Immortality
Juanes, A Dios le Pido
3 Doors Down - several songs to choose from
Bob Marley - again, several songs there
Run DMC

I'll keep looking..

Man, what happened to this forum? This used to be one of the most popular forums on CF.

Anyway, thanks for the input. I've come up with about 150 songs, not including all the possibilities by groups that have several such as U2, Linkin Park, 3 Doors Down, and crossover groups like 12 Stones, Switchfoot and Relient K.

Here are a few:

Lifeline - Papa Roach
Hole Hearted - Extreme
Drowning (Face Down) - Saving Abel
100 Years - Five for Fighting
Where is the Love? - Black Eyed Peas
Holier Than Thou - Metallica
C U When U Get There - Coolio
Hurt - Nine Inch Nails
Life is Beautiful - Sixx AM
Crazy Train - Ozzy Osbourne
Pocketful of Sunshine - Natasha Bedingfield

keep em coming!!
