What a great many Christians today don't know or choose not to admit is that the persecution of the pagans by the Christians following Constantine actually contributed to the destruction of learning and led to the centuries of the Dark Ages

To the extent that if a person disagrees with the science experts. They could face fines or possibly even jail time.

That approach has already been tried and by Christians. If we examine the question of persecution historically we discover a somewhat different picture than is usually understood. The early Christians did endure persecution from the Roman authorities but it was not always and everywhere. It was in fact very patchy in both time and place. With Constantine that persecution was ended but over the next several centuries Christians launched a wide scale, vicious persecution against the pagans, particularly in but not limited to Western Europe. Not only were pagan people persecuted and pagan temples destroyed but universities and academies and libraries were targeted and destroyed. The intellectual infrastructure of civilization was destroyed. This was a contributing factor in the fall of the Roman Empire and the long centuries of the Dark Ages.

There are many forces besides gravity at work here but in the end that water does come down often in vast quantities and very destructively. Gravity wins.

The centre of learning was in Rome was it not? What 'destruction of learning' are you talking about and when? The mythos of a dark age is outdated.

East-Rome stood until the near 1500's, and please point to the lost learning crescent of discovery occurring among pagan Europe until the supposed "dark ages" occurred.

Simply take a bowl of water placed on a table, let the bowl of water calm down like the above photo of this calm lake.

Then just film yourself moving the table with the bowl of water on it, while the bowl of water remains perfectly calm like it is while resting on the non moving table. Record your success at keeping the bowl of water perfectly at rest while moving the table.

It's a poor example now that I think about it, constantly moving around the table is constantly changing the vectors of force and so applying conflicting pressures that will disturb the water.

Imagine if you had a bowl of water on a little boat on your placid lake, if you started it moving at a decent pace and placed you bowl on it as it went past, the bowl would slosh at first then calm down, even as the boat continued to drift.
