  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

is it any fun living on campus? is it worth all the extra cash? i can either go to a college 52 miles away from here for my bachelors or i can do a different degree at home and live at my house instead. the college thats 52 miles away is essentially in the middle of nowhere. i have some family near there and its the most boring small town in the world. is it worth living on campus as far as the experience or should i just save my money and get an apartment when i get done with college?

let me know you college guys and gals thoughts

I have no idea what to tell you because I have not experienced living on campus yet, but I am about to make the decision about where to live next year because I'm transferring to a new school. Thought I'd subscribe to this thread ;)

Here's a list of pros and cons that I made so far:

Living at Home

Pros

My family:
-We all get along extremely well
-They have encouraged me to stay with them instead of moving out

My dog:
-very bonded with my dog; he sleeps in my room, volunteers with me, goes everywhere with me almost
-he is 12 and may not be around much longer so it is good to appreciate him while I still can

Space:
-Private bedroom
-Private bathroom

Other good things:
-Private pool and hot tub
-Pool table
-Free food
-Free of most bills
-No bug problems
-QUIET (good for studying and sleeping well)

Cons

-Driving to campus (gas $$$)
-Not as much opportunity for social life
-Not close to classes, library, gym, nature walks, activities

Living On Campus

Pros

-Close to classes
-People my age
-Library
-Gym (a really nice one)
-Pool (although, a shared pool)
-Nature walks
-Activities, etc (Campus Crusade and whatnot)
-Independence

Cons

-Cost
-Lack of privacy if sharing a bedroom
-May not be able to sleep, study as well due to noise from other ppl
-Will probably have to share a bathroom/shower/toilet with x # of people
-Will not have my dog :(
-Could have a bug problem since college students are not always that good at cleaning up after themselves...
-Might not get along with roommates
-Amount of space is quite small

So would your degree at home be an online degree or just at a college close by?

Living on campus gives you a great opportunity to get involved with social activities whether it is intramural sports or a church organization. You can still get involved when you live at home but sometimes its harder to hear about the groups or motivate yourself to be involved. I can't say I actually ENJOYED(lots of loud people in the middle of the night) living in the dorms but I was definitely more involved living on campus than I am now as an off-campus student. That may also be my personality though!

I also think going to class with other students, having group projects, and interacting with others just prepares you for future jobs where you will have to be around and depend on others. That's definitely something to consider if one of your degree options is online.

Living on campus really helped to improve my social skills, showed me that yes I can take care of myself, and also helped me to not be so attached to my parents. I was really homesick the first semester and as the semesters came and went I'm not longer sad about leaving. I perfer living on my own and I have two amazing Christian Sisters as roommates, so I'm truly blessed.

If you have the choice to live on campus, I'd say do it! Otherwise you'll be missing out on alot :)

I like living on campus. You get to meet lots of people, and you gt more time to bond with them. It's also easier to find people if you need homework help, and it's easier to get to office hours.
At least, that's what I've found.

I've lived on campus all my time at college (but that's because home is 1000+ miles away).

If you have the opportunity, i strongly advise living on campus. My parents commuted to school and say it's one of their biggest regrets. It really allows you to meet all kinds of new people, and keeps you close to the campus, and more importantly, the library!

I live on campus this year, and i'm going to be an HA next year. I love it.

hi!

For two and a half years, I attended a community college, about 20 minutes away from my parent's house. I lived at home and drove to school, sometimes twice a day. I got to know people quite well, but that was because there were no dorms available; everyone commuted.

Then I transferred to a four-year state school, and was very apprehensive about living in the dorms. I signed up, though, and although the first semester was difficult, it really wasn't as hard as I'd thought it'd be. Now I have one semester left (I've been here for nearly two years), and I'm still living in the dorms. I have a single room now (no roommate right now), and I decided to remain on campus because of the close proximity of everything I need -- people, library, food, advice, etc. And I would have it no other way. I love living in the dorms! Certainly, it has its downsides at times, but generally, if you're respectful of others, they'll respect you, as well.

I would strongly advocate going to the college and living in the dorms, rather than pursuing an online degree. And though it will be a big change, I would advise you to completely immerse yourself in the campus the first semester -- live with a roommate, attend campus activities. Otherwise, it's too easy to just hide away, study, and never meet anyone. By the second semester, you'll have friends, know a lot of the faces around campus, and I know you said it's a small town, but hey, friends can make anything fun!

Be sure to let us know what you decide!!

I live on campus and have every year, mainly because my home is about 40 miles away and I don't have my own car. I like it for the most part. I have a decent social life, which consists of hanging out with friends and seeing free movies. I also have the Internet here. At home, I have my animals, which I miss dearly while I'm at school, but it makes going home even more exciting!
