  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've shared this post on 7 Habits of Purpose Driven Christians with a couple friends, one seemed to really like it and another said it wasn't super helpful. Personally I think it's a great reminder on how to live life with purpose, and how our habits affect the way we live. What do you think?

I expect various people might have various impressions. Some ppl like some kinds of book; others like different sorts. This is only to be expected.

My two cents' is that literature which purports to tell Christians what they should be doing, how their life should have more meaning, etc., is something that I struggle with.

The reason is because my instinct is for the first question.

The first question is - according to my instincts - not, What ought Christians to be doing? but, rather: What is a Christian? If the Bible says that a sinner needs to be born again, cleansed through faith by the blood of Christ, then what happens in the lives of those who do indeed have a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus? they, according to Acts 2.42, 'continue steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine, and in fellowship and in breaking of bread and prayers'. Prayer and the Scriptures are central to whatever else a Christian might find him- or herself doing. Romans 8 speaks of Christians crying 'Abba, Father'; the prayer instinct is evidence of new life in Christ.

So really it's an avoiding a 'wag the dog' situation: asking which comes first? and what IS a Christian, according to the Bible.

What a thoughtful reply! Truth is, what Christians should be doing is following the Bible. If we start there, all the details will come from that.

I'm still new to this site but I can tell I'm really going to enjoy your posts, Farouk.

Well thought-out, well-presented. Congrats!

Thanks for that, MelodyJane. I'm sure it's all good advice. Thing I was uncertain about, though, was the purpose purpose-driven Christians are driven towards, that these seven habits might help realise. Do people have a purpose, in the sense they embody someone or something else's idea of what they should be? Or do create their own purposes, by being how they want to be, and either way, how would these habits help with that? I am not criticising, just asking...

Cheers, Strivax.

"2. Change your media choices.

It’s easy to fall into the habit of watching the same shows that we’re used to. We don’t give much thought to how it’s wiring our minds. Much of it is biased towards empty entertainment, violence and unnecessary sexual exploitation. After watching TV you end up thinking about the programming long after it’s over. A simple solution to pointing your mind and heart towards wholesome topics, is to change the source of your entertainment. One way is to switch to choose your movie selections to Pure Flix where movies have meaning and offer great entertainment vs. NetFlix or HBO."

It's perhaps worth noting that the site is "Pureflix insider", i.e. the entertainment blog of PureFlix. Also, whoever wrote this article is going to hell, because the bolded portion is a dirty dirty lie. Out of curiosity, I took a moment to look over the feature box at the Pureflix homepage. It features apparently exactly one kind of movie: independent Christian faith-positive glurge. The closest things to "mainstream" that I found were Beverly Hillbillies and A Christmas Carol, and when those are the highlights of your selection alongside Kirk Cameron movies and Veggietales, something has gone horribly wrong. This is like a hypothetical BlackFlix where all of the movies are Tyler Perry movies - if that's what you're into, then good for you, but you have bad taste, and pretending that this is "the good stuff" in comparison to movies and shows that are actually entertaining (and which actually cost money to license, although I'm sure this is just a coincidence ;) ) in order to sell your crap is just dishonest.

The rest of the advice on the list is actually pretty good, but this bit really stuck out at me, because this one sentence is some of the worst advice I've seen in a while. Switch from NetFlix to PureFlix... Yeah, right after I jam a fork in my eye socket. :D

Mr. Cadet, please report directly to of the offices of the PC Police. A stereotype and an insult in one line. Double-plus ungood.

I see nothing wrong with pureflix, in fact I'm a huge fan of David A.R White.

I'm sorry you hate pureflix so bad, but maybe some of us love pureflix. Also what's so bad about blackflix type movies (movies with all black folks)? - nothing.

A lot of the stuff you take for granted African Americans worked hard for, please keep that in mind next time you insult black films.

Nothing. I've seen a lot of movies with a majority- or entirely-African-American cast that were really good. This is why I mentioned Tyler Perry. The problem is explicitly with Tyler Perry, because Tyler Perry is awful.

Putting Veggietales next to Kirk Cameron?! How dare you sir! Veggietales was actually pretty darn good for a long time. I say this as a non-believer myself, by the way.

Your analysis of Tyler Perry is spot on though.

Good question. IMO the purpose is to live a more mindful Christian life - in what ways am I being unChrist-like? In what ways can I become more Christ-like?

Personally what I took from this section was that even when I'm at home relaxing or commuting somewhere, that it's important for me to be mindful of what I'm watching or listening to. We all have different opinions though :) So then what was your favorite advice?

I like #6 personally, the recognition that our brains are hardwired to seek out problems and solve them, and that sometimes we need to turn that off.

Well, Melody Jane, the article says to change our thinking. But we need to not depend on how we can change our own selves, or else we are limited to what our present character is capable of thinking and trying to change.

I liked some of what he provided but it's things I already try to do like focusing on happy things that help me stay centered with who I am what I believe.

I definitely wouldn't change to Pureflix since I think religious movies usually have immoral oppressive themes. My faveorite movies or shows are usually Anime or movies about LGBT people completing their struggle for happiness in an oppressive world.

I block people that I only want to fight with, I meditate to center myself and get back in touch with who I really am inside, my female person because when I am her I am most happy and at peace with the world and don't feel compelled to go and fight or scream and cry because of who's hurt me. I want to fill my life with beauty and love and peace. Japanese music is a good start!
