This morning during prayer time this image popped into my head. (First time I've had this happen - an image with spiritual meaning) I saw the earth as from space, but it wasn't blue green and white clouds. It looked like a dark grey murky slime was covering it, oozing over the earth. Pin points of light broke through the slime randomly, similar to views of earth at night showing city lights. In some places the lights were thick, in other places they were sparse. Sometimes covered up by the murk then breaking thru to shine again. Fading and growing stronger, disappearing and reappearing.

That is interesting! One thing that amazes me is how Light always overcomes the darkness! Even though there is lots of darkness (and slime), the light can always break through! Perhaps representing the abundance of darkness in the earth today, but God is still able to break through it! If you light a candle in the pitch black night, that little light will overcome all the darkness around it and make it so we can see our way...so is the spirit of God a light to us :)

Thanks for the responses.

I think the earth has been covered in slime since the beginning - there isn't more just because of modern times :) we're aware of it more because of instant communication. I see the image as encouragement not discouragement. Our prayers and daily walk shine forth and we are not to give up hope or think our efforts don't make much of a difference - as in the world is going to hell in a handbasket so what's the point? Every sincere prayer and manifestation of Jesus' love makes the lights shine a little brighter. As whole we're creating a net to cover the world. I know I can get discouraged thinking I'm too insignificant and too weak in faith to be of use to God but that's not true.

I think your interpretation was correct. The points of light are believers on the earth, some whose faith is shining brightly, others whose faith shines more dimly but still shines, and still others whose faith gets temporarily crowded out by the darkness yet reappears again later.

Similar imagery was used by our Lord in Matthew 5:13-16. The teaching was not to let the fear of this world's darkness (i.e. spiritual opposition) cause us to become silent and not shine our light. When God gives us spiritual light, He wants us to shine it forth brightly to the world like "a city set on a hill," a place that can be seen clearly during the night and turned to for increasing light.
