You will eat the flesh of your sons and the flesh of your daughters.
Leviticus 26:29 NIV

The answer is quite simple really. Sometimes people get confused with God's commandments vs prophesy. In this scripture, all God is doing is stating that life will be so hard and people will become so desperate that they will resort to cannibalism in order to survive. God is in no way "commanding" or condoning cannibalism, He is simply stating that this will happen as a result of God’s judgement.

Wait a second so people are going to start eating their children near the end of the world or something? Because I don't hear about anyone eating their children yet. But that is really disturbing.

I dont know if people will resort to cannibalism in the end of days. However, in this particular scripture, the israelites began to worship other false gods. The israelites turned their backs on God. As a result God turned their backs on them in order to show them how much they need God. So the cannibalism was a consequence for their actions and not a direct act of God. I don't believe this was a hyperbole. I believe it really happened. God did not command, encourage, or condone cannibalism. However God does not condemn it either.

Murdering someone in order to cannibalize him (homicidal cannibalism) is undeniably wrong. But what about cannibalizing someone who is already dead (necro-cannibalism) in order to prevent starvation? This is not an entirely hypothetical question, as “survival cannibalism” has indeed occurred. Those who have resorted to cannibalism to stave off starvation include the Donner party in 1846 and the survivors of a 1972 plane crash in the Andes. However, given the Bible’s wholly negative portrayal of cannibalism, it would seem that self-preservation cannot justify such barbarism. Even in the direst and most desperate circumstances, cannibalism should not be a consideration.

Leviticus 26 is a forewarning to what would befall the Israelites if they disobeyed God and found themselves under the "curse". The events listed, especially verses 29-35, were fulfilled in 70 AD when Jerusalem was destroyed... there were accounts by Josephus of cannibalism within the city while they were under siege. The verse about them being scattered among the heathen was also correct after this event.

"27 “‘If in spite of this you still do not listen to me but continue to be hostile toward me, 28 then in my anger I will be hostile toward you, and I myself will punish you for your sins seven times over. 29 You will eat the flesh of your sons and the flesh of your daughters. 30 I will destroy your high places, cut down your incense altars and pile your dead bodies on the lifeless forms of your idols, and I will abhor you. 31 I will turn your cities into ruins and lay waste your sanctuaries, and I will take no delight in the pleasing aroma of your offerings." Lev. 26:27-31 (NIV)

It's prophesying of what will happen to Israel if they disobey the commands of God. It's a common theme throughout Scripture that awful things happen to those who disobey God's commands. It's also prophesied of in the book of Revelation.

27 ‘Yet if in spite of this you do not obey Me, but act with hostility against Me, 28 then I will act with wrathful hostility against you, and I, even I, will punish you seven times for your sins. 29 Further, you will eat the flesh of your sons and the flesh of your daughters you will eat. 30 I then will destroy your high places, and cut down your incense altars, and heap your remains on the remains of your idols, for My soul shall abhor you. 31 I will lay waste your cities as well and will make your sanctuaries desolate, and I will not smell your soothing aromas. 32 I will make the land desolate so that your enemies who settle in it will be appalled over it.

Well reading about the destruction of Jerusalem by Syria, by Babylon, by Rome -- you get to see how that happened in actual history.

No, not the end of the world. There were times in Israel's history that people ate their young because they were so hungry. It happened in the city of Samaria in Israel. There was one story in 2 Kgs 6:24—7.20 of two women who both agreed they would eat their children, and they ate one woman's children, and then the second woman changed her mind. Well the first was really ticked off and went to the ruler of the city about it and had the second woman indicted. And the odd thing was that throughout the story, neither woman nor the ruler seemed bothered by the cannibalism.

Leviticus 26
14 “‘But if you will not listen to me and carry out all these commands, 15 and if you reject my decrees and abhor my laws and fail to carry out all my commands and so violate my covenant, 16 then I will do this to you: I will bring on you sudden terror, wasting diseases and fever that will destroy your sight and sap your strength. You will plant seed in vain, because your enemies will eat it. 17 I will set my face against you so that you will be defeated by your enemies; those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee even when no one is pursuing you.

18 “‘If after all this you will not listen to me, I will punish you for your sins seven times over. 19 I will break down your stubborn pride and make the sky above you like iron and the ground beneath you like bronze. 20 Your strength will be spent in vain, because your soil will not yield its crops, nor will the trees of your land yield their fruit.

21 “‘If you remain hostile toward me and refuse to listen to me, I will multiply your afflictions seven times over, as your sins deserve. 22 I will send wild animals against you, and they will rob you of your children, destroy your cattle and make you so few in number that your roads will be deserted.

23 “‘If in spite of these things you do not accept my correction but continue to be hostile toward me, 24 I myself will be hostile toward you and will afflict you for your sins seven times over. 25 And I will bring the sword on you to avenge the breaking of the covenant. When you withdraw into your cities, I will send a plague among you, and you will be given into enemy hands. 26 When I cut off your supply of bread, ten women will be able to bake your bread in one oven, and they will dole out the bread by weight. You will eat, but you will not be satisfied.

27 “‘If in spite of this you still do not listen to me but continue to be hostile toward me, 28 then in my anger I will be hostile toward you, and I myself will punish you for your sins seven times over. 29 You will eat the flesh of your sons and the flesh of your daughters.
.
This passage is how the prophets knew what God would do to Israel when they disobeyed. Everything about punishment of Israel as a nation in the prophets was already written in the law.
.
2 Kings 6
27 The king replied, “If the Lord does not help you, where can I get help for you? From the threshing floor? From the winepress?” 28 Then he asked her, “What’s the matter?”

She answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give up your son so we may eat him today, and tomorrow we’ll eat my son.’ 29 So we cooked my son and ate him. The next day I said to her, ‘Give up your son so we may eat him,’ but she had hidden him.”
