  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

believe it or not there are levels in hell. this makes sense, becuase the bible says that people who do what is wrong and know they are doing what is wrong, will be punished greater then those who do what is wrong and dont know they are doing what is wrong.

not only that, but it says that people who trample the gift of christ under foot are going to recieve a far greater punishment then everyone else.

heres one:

Hebrews 10

26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?

it says they will be PUNISHED MORE

No...it's says "How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished"

It doesn't mean they will be....too much Dante...too little Scripture. The "punishment" here is the fact that they will no longer receive any of God's mercy. Therefore they will go to hell.

The Apocalypse of Peter speaks to the damned being punished in different ways based on the sins they committed, and this was the influence behind Dante's writings and our contemporary views of hell.

Bottom line, there's no Biblical support for multiple levels of hell. There is though support for multiple levels of heaven.

exactly to the post before this one! besides, i know something you guys don't know. namley, that there is a big spread between the evilness of sinners. some sin by being a drunk, but otherwise are nice guys who treat people with respect. others love to torture people, which is a LOT more evil. SHOULD they get the same punishment? ultimatly, it wouldn't be fair or good or righteous to punish everyone the same.

Well, God is a God of righteousness. God will look and see for what it really is and make his final decision. Whatever fate God chooses for the individual is fitting.

Someone does not go to hell because of sin, they go because of unbelief.

2 Cor. 12:2

aint that sin too? The devil believes...and he's still going to hell.

The 3rd heaven in which that verse is refering to is "the" heaven where God resides and where believers go after death.
As far as the other 2, the 1st is the firmament( earths atmosphere) and the 2nd is outer space (universe).

As far as unbelief, call it what you want, but rejecting Christ is why people end up in hell.

More than what? It says they will be worthy of more severe punishment than being physically killed for rejecting the law of Moses. That's what it says. Let's not read more into it than is there.

Having said that, I'm sure there are different levels of punishment there, just as there are different levels of punishment administered by parents, depending on the severity of the infraction.

Question: does the possibility of more severe punishment motivate you to more holy living?

Chapters and verses plz.

Jeremiah 4:25 Mentions the "birds of the heavens" as in our atmosphere.
Genesis 7:23 mentions the "fowls of heaven."
Lamentations 4:19 "Eagles of heaven"

Genesis 22:17 mentions the stars of heaven, obviously referring to outer space.
Matthew 24:28 mentions stars falling from heaven(outer space)

Psalm 11:4 mentions the throne of God in Heaven. I doubt it is the same heaven as the previous examples.

I could give more examples, but I don't want to be repetitive.

Can't someone believe and still reject (as the devil has done?)

Yes. You can believe Jesus existed but still reject the gospel at the same time.

Someone does not go to hell because of sin, they go because of unbelief.
Forgive me, but I like to counter or at least balance this idea whenever I see it.
(I should have clarified, the following is a quote from A. W. Tozer; that's what the reference immediately below it means )

Another doctrine that hinders God’s work, and one which is heard almost everywhere, is that sinners are not lost because they have sinned, but because they have not accepted Jesus. “Men are not lost because they murder; they are not sent to hell because they lie and steal and blaspheme; they are sent to hell because they reject a Saviour.” This short-sighted preachment is thundered at us constantly, and is seldom challenged by the hearers.

A parallel argument would be hooted down as silly, but apparently no one notices it: “That man with a cancer is dying, but it is not the cancer that is killing him; it is his failure to accept a cure.” Is it not plain that the only reason the man would need a cure is that he is already marked for death by the cancer? The only reason I need a Saviour, in His capacity as Saviour, is that I am already marked for hell by the sins I have committed. Refusing to believe in Christ is a symptom of deeper evil in the life, of sins unconfessed and wicked ways unforsaken. The guilt lies in acts of sin; the proof of that guilt is seen in the rejection of the Savior.

If anyone should feel like brushing this aside as mere verbal sparring, let him first pause: the doctrine that the only damning sin is the rejection of Jesus is definitely a contributing cause of our present weakness and lack of moral grip... It is, for all its harmless seeming, a most injurious belief, for it destroys our sense of responsibility for our moral conduct. It robs all sin of its frightfulness and makes evil to consist in a mere technicality. And where sin is not cured power cannot flow.

- “Paths to Power”, A.W Tozer

Fine..you're splitting hairs. I still disagree to some extent. God provided a way to conquer sin via Jesus. Failure to accept this gift will send us to hell. Accepting this in no way lessens the severity of sin. I never said weren't lost because of sin. What gets us into heaven? Not sinning or the redemptive work of Jesus?
