Actually the question should be flipped around: why can't those who claim to be Christians get along others who think differently?
Just because they claim the name that doesn't mean that they are Christians. Think of the gay priests who claim to be Christians, are they really?
By their fruits ye shall know them. When they lie about you and attack what you believe that's a pretty good clue that they aren't who they say they are. If they really loved God with all their heart, mind and strength and their neighbor as themselves they wouldn't be doing these things. Their doing proves that they don't really love like they ought to. Like the guy who always made sure that he had the biggest flag on the 4th of July--turned out he was a spy for the Russians during the Cold War.

There is no unity and there will never be. You might as well try to unite the balanced, moderate Muslims with fundamentalist, Bin Laden Islamics.
