  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Let's see who can figure this one out!

I've got a little bit of a riddle for ya all'.

What is the one doctrine that just about all churches and denominations seem to agree on? I mean they can disagree just about everything else - such as the "gifts of the spirit," eternal security, predestination, etc. But there is one thing they all stand together on. And I will even throw in Jehova's Witnesses and Mormons on the plate for this one too. Any one wanna take a stab at what that is?

Until you threw in the JW's & Mormans I would have said a Triune God, but since you added those 2 groups I guess I'll say that they believe in a God - not necessarily Yahweh though.

TITHING is the answer that I was looking for.

Since we don't pass an offering plate I didn't think of that. Great question though - you made my brain work.

Just out of curiosity - does anyone here go to a church that doesn't teach or require the "tithe" as a condition of membership?

My church doesn't teach it as a requirement of membership, but a large percentage of the population gives. We also don't teach a literal 10% tithe.

I have never been in a church that teaches tithing as such - as in a literal 10%.

However we have just moved to a town in which both the presbyterian and anglican churches are full of american cotton farmers - a few generations old now. Tithing, as in the literal 10%, is definitely popular. But it goes beyond tithing. This is a generous town. Some of the cotton farmers established a board from which all the profits go to christian ministry. This tiny town (population 2000) has a church which is the wealthiest church of it's denomination in the entire country. They hold a missions convention and invite quite a few mission agencies to come and speak so that they can support them. We have a guy in our congregation who believes if you support a missionary you support the entirity of that missionaries expenses.

I don't know if this is an american thing - but it is certainly strange for australia. I can tell you that.

so - who's supplying the next riddle?
