JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Defense attorneys and death penalty opponents were outraged Thursday over an execution in which the condemned man took more than half an hour to die, needed a rare second dose of lethal chemicals and appeared to grimace.

''I am definitely appalled at what happened. I have no doubt he suffered unduly,'' Angel Nieves Diaz's attorney, Suzanne Myers Keffer, said after Diaz died by lethal injection.

Yep, that's why we cut the hands of off theives.
What does that have to do with anything? We still put people to death, until recently this included children and mentally retarded people. A higher percentage of our population is in prison than any other country and there is no rehabilitation programs to speak of for any of them. Im sure quite a few people in this country would that we did cut the hands off of thieves or stone people as the death penalty.

This is simply a great arguement for the Firing Squad..or hanging...they are quicker and no one is going to take 34 minutes to die.....

Thank God the U.S. still has the moral intelligence to put murderers to death....oh that they would add serial rapists and child molesters to the list also...

And as much as I find Islam appalling, kudos to the Islamic countries that do put to death their murderers....this is one aspect of Sharia I do not mind though the cutting off of hands is to much.....

how disgusting. i do have to applaud jeb bush (that makes me shiver when i say that) and that federal judge in california for haulting exections at the moment. while i honestly don't see this incident as having any long-term effect on the death penalty (it'll be back before you know it,) i do think that this is even MORE evidence that the death penalty is cruel & unusual punishment, more evidence that, when added all up, cannot be ignored.

of course, there are those who LOVE to hear about and see people suffer in the execution chamber (just read CF!) but - constitutional principles forbid it.

That's an absurd contention in light of the fact that the text of the Constitution itself provides for Capital crimes.

No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

Don't like it? You are going to have to amend the Constitution.

*waits for the first person to appear and applaud this appalling occurance*

And they will come ...

What's appalling? The lethal injection process involves multiple steps, where the victim is unconscious. Three drugs are used:

1. Sodium thiopental: to induce a state of unconsciousness while the other two injections take effect.

2. Pancuronium/Tubocurarine: to stop all muscle movement except the heart. This causes muscle paralysis, collapse of the diaphragm, and would eventually cause death by asphyxiation.
3. Potassium chloride: to stop the heart from beating, and thus cause death

Surgery takes what, hours and hours while they mutilate your body? Is that appalling? The first step is unconsciousness in both procedures.

Which supports my argument that we SERIOUSLY over-complicate this whole process

You want to do what, just go to step 2, just let him die by suffication?

What is appalling about this if the guy in unconscious?

If you are going to kill me, then please, let it by with a procedure that knocks me out first. Especially if the procedure last only half and hour.

That's not cruel, that's not unusual, but the media will, I'm sure, leave out that fact to convince people it's 'bad'.

the constitution HAS been amended. the eigth amendment prohibits cruel & unusual punishment. while current supreme court interpretations of the 8th amendment do not forbid capital punishment, i don't see capital punishment lasting another 30 years.

Lets take the extreme. Lets say he suffered. I only have one question then. SO WHAT?

Think what you will about me being heartless, but many people just don't realize what mental pain/torture he was going though. They just look at the fact of possible physical pain. Don't you think his last few days were already alful. What is a little physical pain?

Also, draw what you want from this, but my opinion of the death penalty is not in this post, only my opinion of the out cry of suffering a little physical pain.

Does anyone know what the man was convicted of?

It is sad that he had to die that way, but I can only assume what he did to be in that position was horrid as well.

I think the article said the killing of the owner of a top-less bar during a hold up.
