I've read that, thought it was terrific. Who was your favorite character? I liked Javert, I think he contrasts the difference between law and good pretty well.

I read the book and saw the musical, and i thought it was interesting what they chose to put into the musical. I love the first part of the book with the priest who helps Jean Valjean. He and Jean Valjean are my two favorite characters. Le Mis is probably one of my all time favorite stories!

Victor Hugo was a marvelous social critic as well as fiction writer.

The book is one of my favorites! Make sure you get the unabridged version--it's long but incredible. All about redemption and spirit.

I am going to get through this book finally! I keep reading a bit at a time (with 4 kids it's hard to get a lot of free time) I love this story. The musical is great, but the book is so beautifully written. The complexity of character that Hugo gives is wonderful.

It is a fantastic book. I would echo the poster above who said "make sure you read the unabridged version". One of the key parts that is missing from the abridged version is a description of the battle of Waterloo. I am no great fan of military history, but this description is one of the most engaging bits of historical writing that I have ever read.
