  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

We will not be eating meat or any milk products for the whole of Lent. We will also be limiting our use of oil in cooking to feast days which fall during Lent and only having fish and wine on those feast days where it is permitted. Oh, and no sex either.

That's the easy part. Truly.

The hard part will be abstaining from my passions, not giving in to anger when my children misbehave, not giving in to lustful thoughts, not judging those who I wrongly perceive as being less worthy of God's mercy than I, etc...

That is the hard part of Lent and must admit that I have failed miserably in this fast every year so far :(.

I', gonna try to give up soda (my complete addiction)- and observe the old rules of fast and abstinence- fasting on weekdays of lent (one larger meal and two smaller ones with no snacks!)

Thought about giving up the computer, too. I don't know though.....

I always try to add a devotion or two during Lent, too. So I am going to try to say evening prayer and to return to saying our rosary together as a family.

Also try to give so sort of alms- so I think me and my kids will go shopping every week for a bag of healthy food to give to the charity run through our parish.

In the Sacred Heart of Jesus,
Shannon

I haven't had much experience with fasting, and I've never been through a "full" Lent before! I think right now I'll just focus on no junk food and no meat on Fridays.. the strict fast of Orthodoxy I totally failed at as a "Catechumen"..so I think I'll take it a bit easier. I hate making promises I don't intend to keep :)

Does fish count as meat?

Boneless seafood is able to be eaten on all fasting days (shellfish, octupus :yum:, mussles, squid, calamari, etc.) whereas fish with skeletons are only permitted as "meat" on feast days which fall within a fasting period such as the Annunciation of Mary on March 25 and Palm Sunday. We abstain from meat, fish and milk products on Wednesdays and Fridays throughout the year because our Lord was betrayed and crucified on those two days, but if a special feast day happens to fall on a Wednesday or Friday then fish is permitted.

Of course this is the Orthodox fasting tradition :)

Anyone care to share their thoughts?

I am seriously considering a 40 day internet fast.

Brethren in Christ, God give you Peace.

I certainly understand discussing the history/theology/practice of lenten sacrifice in order to educate. Perhaps even giving some general examples as an illustration. But to publicize what you are giving up or taking up in order to show your love to God seems to only be self-serving. Need I quote a famous parable on the topic?

God Bless,

if it's any consolation, i think this thread was a great idea....what are we to do, keep everything to ourselves...i mean, look at Met's thread...he was considering giving up the Eucharist as a lenten sacrifice, but the response that ensued (in part) led him to think more deeply about it... (sorry for mentioning you Met...:) )

There are many here, including myself, who have little personal interaction with fellow Catholics, this forum is Blessing...to discuss everything that concerns us.
