I know that a lof of us (myself included) aren't Catholic, but I find that a lot of Protestants observe Lent anyway... in the sense that we will often choose something to give up for Lent.

I am giving up fast food. Is anyone else participating?
I observe Lent and this year I have decided to give up watching tv and spend some of that time instead in bible study and reading other books to help my spiritual growth.

And it's going to be hard--I am such a Survivor addict! ;)

I'm Methodist so yes, I observe lent. I'm giving up my beloved Diet Mountian Dew. It's usually the first thing I have in the morning, and the last thing before I go to bed. I figure that giving this up will not only bring me closer to God, but will prove to be one of the healthiest forty days of my life. Guess it won't be a problem getting ni my eight glasses or water every day!

Good luck to everyone that observes lent! May it be a blessing to you!

Holly, how are you going to give up fast food if you're on a road trip to Calgary;) You'll have to pack a lunch or something:D

I was thinking of giving up something for Lent, but then I was thinking (and also read); Jesus already gave up the ultimate thing for Lent: His Life for our sins. I can never to that!

Thank you Jesus. :prayer:

Here is a post I made on another thread about Lent that I thought might be of some relevance there:

Agreeing with Oblio, that nothing we do can ever come close to Christ's sacrifice for us. And I don't believe the observance of Lent is meant to do that. It is a way of preparation of our hearts with the intention of bringing us closer to God, in however we chose to observe it, by fasting, prayer, devotions and scripture meditations, or almsgiving. It is a time to look within ourselves and a time to reflect on the sacrifice given for us. It ends in a joyful celebration of the Resurrection of the One who died for us! Of the Christian calendar, I think the season of Lent and the celebration of Easter are the most meaningful to me.

Many Protestants do it, perhaps not with the same exact reasons as Catholics do... Being raised Catholic and all that, I have always observed Lent...

I haven't made a commitment to God about Lent this year, but I feel that I could learn a lot spiritually to challenge myself and fast from something that has grown too important in my life.

Well! I will have to pack a lunch! Or just eat at my mom's in Calgary ;)

Especially after seeing the Passion last night, I agree with you completely that we could never match Christ's sacrifice. However, I still would like to make some small sacrifices for him...

I decided after my original post that giving up fast food isn't much of a sacrifice at all, and have decided to add secular music to the list. That one hurts a lot more and should have more benefit to my spirit.
