Leighla Treeclimber, Captain
Cleric in the Order of the Protectors of the Forest
Home: Oilasse is Leighla's home country. She was born in Te'rithil, the capital city, but owing to her special nature she soon moved to a small village, deep in the virgin forest, far outside the capital city. There, in the beautiful forest lies the headquarters of the Clerics of the Order of the Protectors of the Forest. Those chosen to be in this order are handpicked by El Himself.
Physical Description
Gender/Race: Female 1/2 elf Age: 26
Ht: 5'2" Wt: 93 Hair: Blond Eyes: Violet Skin: Tan
Leighla is as beautiful as any elf might be. Her blond hair is braided in a thick rope which hangs to the small of her back. Her violet eyes are bright and carry a sparkle that belies her sedate demeanor. She wears the uniform of the forest, green clothes w/ leather jerkin, bracers and boots all tinted green in color along w/ her leather armor. She carries an intricately carved bow and a most unusual looking quiver, which appears to hold an alarming number of arrows. You notice she carries no other weapons, but there appears to be an arrow sticking out of the top of each boot. Neither arrow has any fletching, but appears to have an improvised leather grip wrapped around the haft just as one might see on a dagger or knife of good quality. She stands before you confidently, yet cautiously, ready to respond in the blink of an eye.
Personality
Leighla is rather quiet and mild-mannered. She is not one to brood, but she will not be the one entertaining the party with outlandish stories either. She is most reserved at first meeting, and one may never know when she warms up to them. She is not forthcoming with her opinions, but her mind is quick and she will share tactical information when needed for strategic planning. Many times, people have thought her quietness is a sign of lesser intellect, but those who try to know her find a quick and sharp mind. Once she trusts a companion they will even be treated to her rapier wit. Too many have wrongly judged Leighla and missed out on a great friendship.
Objectives
Each protector is given a large section of the forest as their jurisdiction and Leighla is content to remain in her section of forest, protecting it from poachers and over-eager wood cutters. Only a direct order from the High Protector of the Forest himself brings her out of the special glade she calls home. Too frequently, upon hearing of encroaching evil, he commands her venture out, investigate and report. Many times also telling her to fight the source of evil and prevent it from spreading to, or growing in, their area.
You may wish to turn back if you are playing in a thread w/ this character so that her background may be revealed in game play. If you are determined to continue.....
From the time she was a babe in arms Leighla Treeclimber has been groomed to be a Protector of the Forest. The Creator is said to choose the protectors of His woodlands personally and an ages old test has been administered to elven children since the earliest of days to find those He would have in this service.
In a large room of the council hall the hopeful's parents hold the squirming child at one end of the room while facing the stony gazes of the senior protectors. On the floor between them, stretching the entire length of the room are many shiny things (trinkets, baubles, jewelry and all manner of items babies love to put in their mouths).
On that fateful day 25 years ago Leighla's only parent held her wriggling body as she awaited the signal of the cadre of warrior priests on the other end of the room. When the most senior of the forest protectors motioned slightly with his hand Leighla's mother placed her on the floor and awaited the results of the test. The baby, for her part, was making her way to the other end of the room on all fours, pushing aside all the shiny objects in her way. Meanwhile, the priests waited impatiently, eager for the test to be over. The most senior of them, especially, felt it was a waste of time to allow a half-elf to even face the trial, sure the babe would stop at the first attractive obstacle and chew on it with toothless gums, as most ELVEN children did. However, the Creator of all had something else in mind.
Every brow in the room, including her mother's rose as little Leighla passed by all things most babies would find irresistable to sit herself at the feet of the High Protector of the Forest. There she picked up the only wooden object on the floor, an intricately carved bow, and proceeded to chew on it with almost toothless gums. Incredulously the priests looked down on the babe that had just passed the time tested gauntlet of infant temptation, some with smiles and others with scowls.
For a few moments no one said anything, then in a tone that fully communicated his frustration the High Protector of the Forest said two words only, "Train her." With that, he picked up his beautiful, somewhat dampened bow, and stalked from the council hall. Barely concealing her elation, Leighla's mother listened to the instructions of the Deputy High Protector. If Leighla was to be a Protector of the Forest there was much work to be done.
Leighla's hair was never to be cut and from the time she could walk she was trained daily in woodland skills. It is never too early to teach forest safety to children, but Leighla had to learn skills that would lay a foundation for the many years of teaching to come. When she was seven she was told to take an acorn and plant it in a secret place only she knew. She was taught prayers to pray over the seed and special mixtures to fertilize and nourish the soil in which it grew. She was taught the art of intricate woodcarving and began to use it on her sapling at the age of fourteen. Praying over, feeding well and skillfully carving her bow from out of the very ground, Leighla formed a tremendous bond with the only weapon she would ever use.
Leighla also became a consumate Forest Protector, knowing all there could be to know about the woodlands and the flora and fauna it contains, and living in harmony with them. Finally, on the first day of the Feast of Leaf Change in her sixteenth year, Leighla was commanded to make the final cut on her bow, the cut which would separate it from the earth from which it had grown.
As she brought the bow into the Protectors' stronghold there was much celebrating going on, and for the first time her hair was cut. Five feet of flowing blond hair was shorn from Leighla's head, and from this she was to weave her bowstring. Her thick hair allowed enough for her to make three strong ropes, thin, but tensile. They would serve her well whenever she nocked an arrow.
Because of the stigma surrounding her half-elven heritage she had to be twice as good as the other novices just to be considered equal, but Leighla was up to the challenge and graduated as a Protector, First-Class, a rare achievement as only Protectors who have served at least a year are usually granted this status.
Over the years Leighla gained in prowess with her bow, in the power of her mana and in all of her woodland skills. Now she has become the best of the Protectors, which is even admitted, albeit begrudgingly, by the High Protector of the Forest himself.
Misc. Info
Leighla holds the rank of Captain Protector, which means she is in command of a very large area of woodland and has been given glade she can call her own. Her basic woodland skills are beyond compare. She can make magical arrows, including arrows of slaying. She has become such as skilled archer that she can shoot up to eight arrows in a minute with accuracy, twelve with lesser success. Range no longer means anything to her, whatever distance her bow can achieve Leighla can shoot with pinpoint accuracy. People who have been priveleged to see a Protector in target practice say that they are the "best archers that have ever been, or will be."
Note: Only those who totally dedicate themselves to the mastery of archery can be inducted into the Order of Solonor Thelandira. The skill of these archers is unmatched, but they can NEVER use any other weapons besides the bow and arrow. If this weaponry limitation is broken the Protector will be drummed out of the order.
They are not even allowed to use a knife and fork to eat, however, each protector carries a specially blessed knife which he/she must use in the making of arrows. In addition, recreational woodcarving is allowed and the clerics of Solonor have abilities found only in the most skilled of artisans. If anyone should come into possession of woodcarving done by a Protector of the Forest that person is highly favored. Many have sought the skills of the clerics of Solonor to fashion special bows. None can use the bows made especially by the protectors for their own use, some have tried and lived to regret it due to the wards placed upon the weapon, and the fact it is bound to its maker. However, occassionally a protector finds him or herself in need of money and will take a commission to make a weapon of such fine quality as to be suitable for enchantment. Such bows are rare as protectors seldom find the need to build weapons for others just to make money.
Leighla has a wondrous quiver which gives her an endless supply of a variety of arrows. They are listed below:
1) Normal Flight Arrow 2) Normal Sheaf Arrow 3) Arrow of Evil Slaying
4) Arrow of Undead Slaying 5) Ice Arrow 6) Flame Arrow 7) Stone Piercing
8) Metal Piercing 9) Grappling 10) Blessed/Holy Arrow 11) Poison Tip
12) Sleep Arrow 13) Shattering Arrow 14) Light Arrow
Very few are ever called to be Protectors of the Forest, and many cannot live up to the strictures of the profession. Still, for those who have made the grade, each of the Protectors say the sacrifices are worth it to be counted as one of the elite Clerics in the Order of Solonor Thelandira.
