Well... my wife and I are going to see it tomorrow night. We too like epic fiction.
Sensational plots are popular, and in order to refute; I better know what I'm talking about.

I guess that is one way to look at it... the other is that it's a small price to pay to equip ones self.
Men in both our denominations study "heretical" works in Seminary as they prepare for ordination.
Those of us who are steadfast in our faith, and who continue to submit our selves to a life time of study, catechesis, and spiritual growth are not the ones that will be lead astray.
My concern is for those who are less steadfast than we are. They attend films like this, and often leave with misconceptions that may "taint" their understanding of God and corrupt what little spark of faith that they may have. By knowing what the film conveys, we might better arm our selves with "the whole Armor of God", and defend the faith.
If we can do this... and be entertained at the same time, that's kinda like spitting in the devil's eye!

whereby to kill Jesus even before His birth would redeem mankind
I don't know about that. Christ's human suffering(Passion) had allot to do with our salvation. How could Christ take on worldly sins if he has no worldly body to take them on and hence no blood to shed(no shedding of blood, no remission)?? How could our humanity be connected with Christ if he didn't have a human body??
Sounds kind of offesive to me. Gabriel killing people? Etc. Etc. Etc. Infinity.Just got back from being out for the day. I saw "Legion" during that time.
It was truly a FANTASTIC movie. While the theology was completely wrong, the movie was grand. The characters had depth and history that i havent seen in a movie in a long time. You watched them develop as they began to more fully understand the predicament they were facing, instead of staying the same flat characters they were at the beginning of the movie which most films nowadays do. Not only that, but you knew the history of each character. You knew why Charlie was where she was at; you learned about Jeep's mom leaving and him having to take care of his father, and now love Charlie no matter what. You knew why Audrey and her parents fought and why they were on the road; you knew why Michael decided to "give God what he needs not what he wants." The characters had depth, something which i must applaud.
Moving on from the fact that as a FILM (a fictional piece of work) it was spectacular, the theology was questionable at best. There was truth within it (because all lies need a basis in truth and so do all films). The first being that the world is lost in darkness. Another being that we are all in need of a savior who lead us out of the darkness. Yet another being the fact that within the darkness of today, there are those who shine and are not lost. Who love unconditionally for no reason; who follow the truth; who don't care about themselves but solely about others. (That was Jeep within the movie.) One of my favorites, however, is what happens at the end of the movie. At this point you all know that Michael has fallen and "betrayed" God. However, at the end he comes back as an angel after being killed in human form by Gabriel. This is the representation of the love and grace of God. That no matter what we do, if we turn to Him, He will accept us back into His loving arms. Not only that, but Michael refuses to kill Gabriel. Gabriel then says "i would not have shown you such mercy." To which Michael replies "and that is why you have failed Him." It reminds us that we need to be like God and show people mercy and grace, no matter how hard it can be sometimes because that is what He did and what He calls us to do as His followers.
While there were some great truths within the movie, it still contained fallacies that cannot go ignored. One being the fact that angels posses people, give them pointy teeth, curse worse than a trucker, practically bite people in half, and climb on the ceiling like a spider. Another being that God can change His mind and not know what is best. However, i do not see these as blasphemous as much as just untruths that the world may belief that we need to refute. As an American myself i do not think many people today truly know what blasphemy is. I would say it is more what Muslims believe--that Jesus was a prophet but not the son of God. Not that God can change His mind. It is important that we as Christians know and understand the lies that the world believe about God if we are ever going to clearly articulate the Truth of God to them. Otherwise, there will be a disconnect that will never be able to be overcome because we will not be able to take them from where they are to where we are.
Overall, i enjoyed this movie very much. I had a great time viewing it and could not tell what was going to happen next most of the time, something most movies cannot accomplish nowadays. While it may have had some fallacies, it also had great truth and is a reminder to all of us that we need to be on our toes about the lies that Satan will try to fill us with about our God and be able to refute them with the Truth.
My favorite part of the movie was a line by a character named Percy who said, "When i was little my dad used to tuck me in every night. And every night he would say 'if for some reason you do not wake up in the morning, and today was your last day on Earth. Would you be proud of what you have done so far? If not, its time to change that.'" It is a reminder to me at least that we do not know when our last day will be and we need to live everyday giving our all for God, because we do not know what tomorrow will bring.
I hope this made sense, and im willing to answer any questions about the movie.
