Learning music theory

I searched up 'how to compose a rock song' and I was reading up on something. The author talked about a chord progression. Then he used an example from Blink182. Apparently, the example he used from Blink182 was a bad song (with a bad word). Is there anything wrong with using that chord progression and learning the theory?

I want to use it in my other band and also a Christian band if I can form one.

I would say you would be taking something bad and turning it for good.

How do you know that? He would be using the chord to praise God. We need to remember that Jesus paid the price.....our perceived good works don't help that along.

Good point seajoy. Music is just sound. It's the lyrics that make a song good/bad, not the genre of music.

I totally agree with Seajoy... there is not one thing wrong with the chords... God created music and it is ALL His. And it's great to take something like that and use it for good.

God takes every evil thing that ever happened to us or that anyone ever did to us and uses it for good.

What God cleans up is never tainted. Remember that song, God Gave Rock and Roll To You? Remember Petra used it. And Petra rocked! Then, Kiss tried to turn it into something bad. Now if it works that way it can certainly work in reverse...

I think it's a great idea.

Good point Yuki. Now onto a new (similar) topic. There's something else I was wondering. It seems a bit similar to this topic, so I shouldn't start another thread.

I purchased sound gear a while back. I was watching an interview on those products today and I realized the factory was in New Jersey. Now, there is a hockey team called the 'new jersey devils'. Does it make my sound gear bad if it was from New Jersey?

Not at all. As I said, everything belongs to the Lord. There are things like Tazmanian Devils, and Devil's food cake, which Christians love, and I love deviled eggs, but I put sweetener in mine... none of these things has any power. In fact even if your sound system was offered to idols or something ... as Paul said:

1 Corinthians 8:4

As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol [is] nothing in the world, and that [there is] none other God but one.

Don't let the enemy scare you by causing you to think that anything belongs to him. Devil means "deceiver". Now, maybe if your sound system was called, "Satan's Sound" or something like that, it might be a little distasteful but... devil doesn't belong to Satan, it is simply a descriptive word, like you are a man... or "the man, guitarintro".

I know you aren't going to eat your sound system but... anyway, there is evil and good in every city. You can still visit New Zealand, even though they have Tazmanian Devils there. (Or wherever they are, lol)... and there are dust devils.......

....... and on and on. No worries.

That made sense Yuki. I guess my main problem is I get confused of what is blasphemous and what is actually just a sin. My mind keeps finding new loopholes and finding new ways to worry.
